At present, the manufacturing industry is the commanding height of global economic competition. As the main engine leading the upgrading of the manufacturing industry and a new driving force for economic development, technology intensive manufacturing is the focus of competition among countries.Product export quality is directly related to a country’s export performance and trade gains, and has become a new advantage for a country to participate in international competition. Therefore,China’s technology intensive manufacturing industry must make efforts to improve the quality of export products,in order to drive China’s manufacturing industry to break through the "low end lock",reshape new advantages in international competition, and boost the high-quality development of foreign trade. As a new economic form that integrates core digital technologies such as the Internet and 5G,the digital economy is booming, becoming a powerful new driving force for economic growth.Unlike traditional industrial and agricultural economies, the digital economy has permeability and integration, which can boost the high-quality development of traditional industries. Can the digital economy promote the upgrading of the export quality of China’s technology intensive manufacturing products? What is its impact mechanism? Analyzing the above issues is of great significance for the construction of a powerful trading country in the context of the digital economy era.Unlike the current literature that analyzes the impact of the digital economy on product export quality from the perspective of enterprises and regions, this article selects an industry perspective for analysis.Taking into account the characteristics of technology intensive manufacturing industries, this article studies the degree of industry concentration in such industries, and selects intermediary channels that are more suitable for high-tech industries to test the intermediary mechanism. The research results show that: first, the development of the digital economy has significantly improved the export quality of technology intensive manufacturing products, and this conclusion is still valid after the robustness test.Secondly, the digital economy has shown a more significant promoting effect on the export quality of products in highly concentrated technology intensive manufacturing segments.Thirdly, the intermediary effect test results show that easing financing constraints and improving total factor productivity are the main ways for the digital economy to promote the export quality improvement of technology intensive manufacturing products. On this basis, this article proposes relevant policy recommendations: The government should further strengthen financial subsidies and the construction of industrial Internet platforms to promote the integrated development of China’s technology intensive manufacturing industry and the digital economy. Each industry should also make full use of central and local policy support to accelerate the digital transformation and strive to improve the quality of product exports.
