Bananas are the largest fruit and agricultural pillar industry in Hainan Province. The sustainable development of the banana industry is of great importance in improving agricultural productivity and economic efficiency,as well as enhancing the well-being and income levels of farmers. However, with the continuous increase in production and living costs, the income from small-scale family banana planting can no longer meet the basic needs of farmers. Therefore,Hainan banana family farms urgently need to shift to moderately scaled operations. This study takes Hainan banana family farms as the research object, aiming to promote banana cultivation on an appropriate scale, improve the economic efficiency of Hainan banana family farms, and explore the most economical way of banana cultivation for banana growers.Based on the data obtained from a survey of 259 Hainan banana family farms, this study provides a comparative analysis of the cost components and economic benefits of banana family farms of different scales.Based on the theory of agricultural scale economy and marginal reward theory, the appropriate scale value of banana planting for Hainan banana family farms was first calculated using the C-D production function, and the Tobit regression model was applied to analyze the factors affecting their moderate scale operation, and the results were as follows:(1)the average size of Hainan banana family farm is 21.03 mu,through the C-D production function,Hainan banana family farm suitable banana planting scale is 47.95 mu.Most banana family farms have not reached this scale,so it is necessary to promote moderate scale operation.(2)The empirical analysis shows that Hainan banana family farms are in the stage of increasing returns to scale.Labor, capital and land inputs all have a significant impact on banana production. In terms of economic efficiency, banana family farms [40-50 mu)performed the best, while the largest family farms [50-73 mu)in net profit, total unit cost, net profit per unit and return on cost four indicators than the operating range [40-50 mu)of family farms, indicating that there is a problem of moderation in scale of operation, not blindly expand the scale of production.(3)Hainan banana family farm moderate scale operation is significantly affected by a variety of factors. This study found by constructing Tobit model, farm owner’s age, land transfer method, banana planting density, the degree of impact of wilt disease, the number of agricultural training, whether to join the production organization, the difficulty of access to market price information on Hainan banana family farm moderate scale operation has a significant impact. Finally, based on the findings of the study, the following responses are recommended:(1)Improve the social service system and enhance the level of technical services.(2)Focus on vocational training to produce specialized and highly-skilled farmers.(3)Standardize the land transfer market and improve the land transfer mechanism. |
