The report to the 20 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China pointed out that the focus of high-quality development should be placed on the establishment of a modern industrial system,and the real economy such as manufacturing should be advanced,intelligent and green.At present,the global industrial chain value chain is constantly adjusting,but China’s manufacturing industry is facing such problems as insufficient effective demand,weakened resource endowment advantage,and disorderly market competition.Under the dual pressure of increasing external economic uncertainty and weak internal demand,it is particularly important to explore new economic growth points,promote supply-side structural reform,and promote the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry.in recent years,the digital economy,which is based on data and digital technology,has developed rapidly around the world,opening up new ideas for the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industries around the world.Therefore,it is of great practical significance to explore the effect of digital economy on the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industry.First of all,based on relevant theories such as innovation-driven theory,industrial structure theory,technological progress theory and externality theory,this paper defines the concepts of digital economy and the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industry,analyzes from three dimensions of direct effect,indirect effect and spatial spillover effect,and proposes the research hypothesis of digital economy on the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industry.Secondly,the input-output analysis method is used to calculate the scale of digital economy from 2012 to 2020 at the provincial level from the two dimensions of digital industrialization and industrial digitalization respectively.A comprehensive evaluation index system for the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry is constructed from the four dimensions of innovation ability,quality efficiency,green development and digital technology,and the transformation and upgrading index of the manufacturing industry is measured by the entropy weight method.And explore the spatio-temporal evolution of the two by data visualization.Thirdly,the panel benchmark regression model is constructed to empirically analyze the direct effect of digital economy on the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industry,and the intermediary effect model is constructed with factor marketization index as the intermediate variable to verify the indirect effect of digital economy on the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industry.Finally,by using exploratory spatial data analysis,the spatial distribution characteristics of Chinese manufacturing transformation and upgrading are studied.Based on the spatial econometric analysis method,the spatial Durbin model is established to explore the spatial spillover effects of the digital economy on manufacturing transformation and upgrading.Through the research findings: first,the digital economy of our country is in the stage of rapid development,the rapid development of industrial digitalization and digital industrialization,manufacturing industry transformation and upgrading steadily;in terms of spatial layout,there is a "digital divide" in the development of digital economy and a "structural gap" in the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industry,both of which show a development pattern of strong east and weak west,strong south and weak north.Second,the digital economy has a direct effect on the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry.At the same time,the digital economy has an indirect effect on the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry by influencing the marketization of factors.Thirdly,at the provincial level,the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industry has significant spatial agglomeration effect and spatial spillover effect.The development of local manufacturing industry will affect the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industry in neighboring regions.in different regions,the forms of spatial effects are different.The positive spillover effect of manufacturing transformation and upgrading in the eastern region is significant,while the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing in the central and western regions have different degrees of inhibitory effect on the development of neighboring regions.in order to give full play to the positive role of digital economy in promoting the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industry,corresponding countermeasures and suggestions are put forward.First,we should speed up the construction of new infrastructure to strengthen the foundation for the development of digital economy.Secondly,we should cultivate digital talents and increase the reserve of digital talents with high skills and professional knowledge.Third,improve the digital governance system and improve the level of government digital services;Fourth,build a platform for digital production,operation,collaboration and governance in the manufacturing industry.Fifth,rationally distribute manufacturing enterprises and give full play to the radiating and driving role of advanced manufacturing.
