Under the multiple impacts of economic integration, rapid development of transportation, and free trade policies, the world corn trade pattern is undergoing profound changes. The world corn trade relationship is deeply intertwined and presents complex network characteristics.Firstly, based on the data collected by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on the main food crop corn from 1996 to 2019,this article expounds the current situation of world corn trade from three aspects: corn production, consumption structure, and import and export. The data shows that the world’s total corn output has increased significantly since2000,with significant interannual fluctuations. In 2013,it exceeded 1 billion tons; The massive increase in corn production has led to changes in the consumption structure of corn, resulting in new consumer demand, leading to an increase in consumption;Currently, the growth rate of world corn production and consumption is basically consistent, but in the long run,the growth rate of domestic consumption of corn is faster than the increase of corn trade volume, and the demand growth is strong, which is likely to lead to a phenomenon of oversupply.Secondly, using international trade theory, complex network theory, and complex network analysis methods,we selected indicators such as node, density, trade connection sides, network efficiency, degree centrality, proximity centrality, and intermediary centrality to depict the world corn trade network for the past 20 years using Gephi based on the world corn trade statistics from 1996 to 2019 in the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database, and analyzed the overall structure of the world corn trade Analyze the degree of close trade relations and the status trend of corn trading countries. Finally, based on the world corn trade pattern constructed by a complex network, using the QAP quadratic assignment procedure regression method,we selected dependent variables such as GDP,geographical distance, and institutional culture to explore the significance level of factors affecting the corn trade pattern.Based on the full text, the conclusions of the study are as follows:(1)Corn harvest area and yield are the fastest growing food crops in the world, but the export volume of corn has not increased compared to the total yield on a year-on-year basis, which is actually a change in the consumption structure of corn in producing countries, mainly reflected in the feeding of corn.(2)With the development of the economy and corn processing industry, the links between various corn trading countries have become increasingly close, and the number of countries in the core position of corn trade has increased year by year.At the core level, economically developed EU countries have joined regions such as Asia and Africa.(3)The factors affecting the world corn trade are wide and varied in depth, which are mainly related to a country’s GDP,geographical distance from other countries, and the formulation of domestic trade policies. In response to the increasing gap between the supply and demand of corn in the world and the current tense demand for corn in China, the following suggestions are proposed to ensure national food security: First, strengthen production and trade cooperation with corn import source countries;Second, further improve China’s corn trade system;Third, increase efforts to promote high-quality transportation construction;Fourth, optimize China’s corn import and export structure;Fifth, increase the yield of corn per unit area and expand agricultural investment.
