Manufacturing industry is the pillar industry of the national economy and an important manifestation of the comprehensive national strength of the country.After decades of rapid development,China’s manufacturing industry has made great progress,and China has become a veritable manufacturing country.However,the rapid expansion of production capacity has also led to increasing energy consumption and carbon emissions,which poses a great challenge to the sustainable development of China’s manufacturing industry.It has become an important focus to explore the sustainable development of the manufacturing industry,taking into account green development and efficiency growth.Challenges and opportunities coexist.As China continues to promote the digital transformation,its efficiency and cost advantages are increasingly prominent,and the digital transformation has gradually become a strategic deployment at the national level.The "Fourteenth Five-Year Plan" for National Informatization also proposes "to promote the coordinated development of digital greening","to lead the greening with digitalization,and to drive the digitalization with greening",which shows that there is great potential to help the greening through digitalization.Based on this,this paper studies the impact of digital transformation on the green innovation efficiency of manufacturing industry,which has important practical significance for improving the green innovation efficiency of manufacturing industry and realizing sustainable development.This paper systematically studies the impact of digital transformation on the green innovation efficiency of manufacturing industry by combing the relevant literature of digital transformation and green innovation efficiency of manufacturing industry.First of all,the connotation of digital transformation is redefined from both broad and narrow aspects through sorting literatures,and the impact mechanism of digital transformation on the green innovation efficiency of China’s manufacturing industry is clarified by combining efficiency theory,industrial structure theory,human capital theory and transaction cost theory.Secondly,the evaluation index system of the degree of digital transformation and the efficiency of green innovation in manufacturing industry is constructed respectively.The degree of digital transformation and the efficiency of green innovation in manufacturing industry in China’s provinces from 2013 to 2021 are measured by using the entropy weight method and the Super-SBM model of unexpected output.The measurement results are used to analyze the current status of the degree of digital transformation and the efficiency of green innovation in manufacturing industry in China’s provinces.Finally,using the panel data of 30 provincial administrative regions from 2013 to 2021,the paper uses the fixed effect model to test the direct effect of digital transformation on the efficiency of green innovation in manufacturing industry,uses the intermediary effect model to test the intermediary effect of industrial structure upgrading,human capital and transaction costs,and tests the robustness of the research results.Based on the above research results,this article concludes as follows:(1)Although the average value of China’s digital transformation degree fluctuated greatly during the research period,it generally showed a slow upward trend.From 2013 to 2021,the average digital transformation degree of 30 provinces and cities in China was 0.27,of which the average in 2015 and 2021 was 0.26,lower than the national average;The average value in 2020 is the highest,reaching 0.29.(2)During the research period,the green innovation efficiency of China’s manufacturing industry increased year by year.From 2013 to 2021,the average green innovation efficiency of the manufacturing industry in 30 provinces and cities in China was 0.51,of which the lowest was 0.48 in 2013 and the highest was0.67 in 2020.In 2017,due to the financial crisis,and in 2021,due to the impact of the COVID-19,there was a decline.(3)Benchmark regression results show that digital transformation can significantly improve the green innovation efficiency of manufacturing industry,the degree of digital transformation increases by one unit,and the green innovation efficiency of manufacturing industry increases by 1.005 units.(4)The intermediary effect test results show that the upgrading of industrial structure,human capital and transaction costs play a significant intermediary role in the process of digital transformation affecting the green innovation efficiency of manufacturing industry,that is,digital transformation can improve the green innovation efficiency of manufacturing industry by promoting the upgrading of industrial structure,improving the level of human capital and reducing transaction costs.On this basis,this paper puts forward four policy recommendations: First,accelerate the construction of digital infrastructure,innovate digital technology,and comprehensively promote digital transformation.Second,promote the deep integration of digital industry and traditional industry,and promote the optimization and upgrading of industrial structure.Third,improve the talent training system and accelerate the transformation from a large population country to a powerful human capital country.Forth,promote data co-construction,sharing and governance,and help enterprises reduce costs and increase efficiency.
