ASEAN countries are important tea consuming countries, and there is a huge space for the development of tea economic and trade cooperation between China and ASEAN countries. As the center of the world’s tea tree origin and one of the important birthplaces of Chinese tea culture,Yunnan Province has a long history in tea planting and production and processing. With its congenital superior natural conditions and climate environment,Yunnan Province has produced a variety of tea, such as the famous Pu’er tea,Dianhong tea, etc."Yun tea" has become an important part of the unique "Yun" products. The tea industry is an important starting point for targeted poverty alleviation and one of the characteristic industries of Yunnan Province. It has high hopes in helping farmers increase income and rural revitalization.Yunnan’s tea garden area and tea production are among the best in the country. However,in terms of tea export,Yunnan Province lags behind other provinces.Besides, the ASEAN member countries close to Yunnan Province and close to each other in humanities also have problems and deficiencies in its tea export,In addition, the tea industry in Yunnan Province has problems such as low product industrial chain, low product efficiency, backward marketing model, and lack of relatively strong well-known brands, which makes the competitiveness of tea in Yunnan Province weak.In addition, during the development of "Yun tea",there are "four imbalances" in the market. The reason is that the tea industry in Yunnan Province still has problems such as too extensive strategy and low planting and processing technology standards in the market competition.Based on the China ASEAN Free Trade Area(CAFTA),which coincides with the official entry into force of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership(hereinafter referred to as RCEP),in order to mitigate various negative impacts caused by the COVID-19,expand the export market of "Yun tea",and revitalize the industrial and economic development of Yunnan Province,It is very important to study the trade potential and influencing factors of tea exports from Yunnan Province to ASEAN member countries. How to give full play to the advantages of Yunnan’s characteristic tea industry, expand the overseas market of "Yun tea" and seek the growth point of tea trade is an important issue for the development of Yunnan’s tea industry.Based on this problem orientation, this paper first analyzes the situation of tea industry in Yunnan Province from the aspects of development history, planting, production and processing, export trade, etc.,and analyzes the competitiveness of tea export in Yunnan Province and the complementarity between Yunnan tea and ASEAN member countries by using RCA index and TCI index, and points out the main problems of tea industry in Yunnan Province. Then, using the extended gravity model, the data of Yunnan tea exports to ASEAN member countries from 2005 to 2020 are selected for empirical analysis. The study found that the population size of ASEAN importing countries, the amount of tea imports from ASEAN member countries, the tea output of Yunnan Province, and the exchange rate of ASEAN importing countries against the United States dollar are the main influencing factors of tea exports from Yunnan Province. In addition to the population size of ASEAN member countries and the exchange rate against the United States dollar, other factors have a significant role in promoting the impact of tea exports from Yunnan Province to ASEAN countries. After that, the export trade potential of Yunnan tea to ASEAN member countries is calculated according to the empirical results. The calculation results of the export trade potential show that Malaysia,Singapore,Vietnam and Laos all have huge potential, and the trade potential index of Myanmar fluctuates somewhat. From 2005 to 2009,it was potential reshaping, after 2009,it was potential development, and most years of Thailand were potential reshaping,It shows that Yunnan tea still has a large export potential in ASEAN member countries.Among them,Myanmar,Singapore and Vietnam have the largest import of black tea,Thailand has the largest demand for green tea,and Malaysia has a high preference for Pu’er tea.Yunnan Province should be guided by the tea preference of ASEAN member countries, and vigorously explore the trade potential of Yun tea in ASEAN countries. At the same time,Yunnan Province should seize the opportunity of RCEP to balance the development strategies of Yunnan tea, which will help to expand and strengthen the international market of Yunnan tea and make it an important hub industry of domestic and international double circulation. Finally, this article proposes specific strategies and suggestions from the perspectives of the Yunnan Provincial Government and cloud tea enterprises.
