Manufacturing is the backbone of the nation, the cornerstone of a strong nation, and a key component of the national economy. The advantages of China’s large population, vast territory, and other low supply costs, however, are gradually fading away due to the rapid development of new technologies, the increasing complexity of the international environment, and changing economic standards. As a result, issues like a massive but weak manufacturing industry,a low structural level, and a lack of fundamental competitiveness are gradually emerging, forcing the manufacturing industry to urgently expand its value. It is necessary to accomplish industrial transformation and upgrading.High-tech service companies can not only offer the manufacturing sector top-notch services, but also act as a source of inspiration for its growth. This research explores the effects of high-tech service industry concentration on the modernization and transformation of manufacturing from this angle. This paper focuses on six factors in order to perform a thorough and systematic analysis on the modernization and transformation of high-tech industrial and service sectors. The backdrop of the study and the significance of this paper are first described, followed by a comparison of the pertinent domestic and foreign literature and a discussion of this work’s novel features.Secondly, the concept of agglomeration of high-tech service industries and the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industries are defined, the theories of industrial agglomeration, industrial upgrading, and industrial integration and development are organized, and the mechanisms by which agglomeration of high-tech service industries influences the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industries are discussed. In addition, the size and employment status of the high-tech service sector and the manufacturing sector are reanalyzed, and aggregate indicators created using location entropy and principal component analysis are used to gauge the level of modernization and transformation of the manufacturing sector at the national and regional levels. After that, panel regression models and spatial panel models are created to examine the effects of high-tech service agglomerations on the transformation and modernization of manufacturing. The effects of high-tech service agglomerations on manufacturing are also examined at the regional level.Lastly, the current state of high-tech service industry and manufacturing development in China and abroad is analyzed, and the lessons learned from high-tech service industry agglomerations in manufacturing transformation and upgrading are compiled for China’s future reference. The following conclusions are drawn by the study after doing theoretical and empirical analysis:(1)Although China’s high-tech service sector is expanding quickly, its scale still needs to be expanded;the manufacturing sector continues to support China’s economic growth and is a significant employer, even though its transformation and upgrading are progressing steadily;there are significant regional differences in terms of development.(2)Data from 30 provinces and cities were analyzed between 2008 and 2021,and the results demonstrate that there are distinct differences between provinces and cities in terms of the degree of high-tech service industry concentration as well as the modernization and upgrading of the manufacturing sector.(3)The development of local manufacturing industries and the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry are both facilitated by the concentration of high-tech service industries, which demonstrates that provinces and cities can raise the level of high-tech service industry concentration and utilize the concentration effect to these ends.As China’s industrial sector is being transformed and upgraded, there is regional variability in the concentration of high-tech service industries. While it has a restraint in the eastern, central, and northeastern regions, the concentration of high-tech service industries in the western regions strongly promotes the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry.(4)The concentration of high-tech service businesses has a notably good spatial impact on the modernization and transformation of the manufacturing sector. In other words,a greater concentration of high-tech service businesses in one area might encourage the modernization and transformation of nearby manufacturing.Practical suggestions are given for the government, industry, and business on the basis of the findings of the aforementioned empirical analysis as well as national and worldwide experience.
