In the context of the new development paradigm of "dual circulation",China is at an important stage of consumption upgrading, and has made significant progress in expanding the scope of consumption, improving the level of consumption and optimizing the structure of consumption, but at this stage there are still unreasonable external constraints affecting the quality and level of consumption. In recent years,cross-border e-commerce has played a key role in expanding the scale of trade and smoothing regional economic development, and has gradually become the primary way for enterprises to expand their international markets, improve brand awareness and image, and enhance their core competitiveness. As a product of information and communication technology and traditional finance,cross-border e-commerce drives consumption upgrading of residents with its unique characteristics of borderlessness,real-time and paperlessness. This indicates that it is of great theoretical and practical significance to study the relationship between the development of cross-border e-commerce and residents’ consumption upgrading in China from the theoretical and practical perspectives, and to explore the relevant paths of cross-border e-commerce development that promote residents’ consumption upgrading,so as to establish an effective and long-lasting mechanism to promote consumption upgrading, which is of great theoretical and practical significance to promote China’s sustainable and healthy development and meet people’s needs for a better life.On the basis of combing the existing research results at home and abroad, this paper analyzes the effect and path of cross-border e-commerce development affecting residents’ consumption upgrading through theoretical and empirical aspects.Based on the relevant theories about cross-border e-commerce and consumption, this paper investigates how cross-border e-commerce development specifically affects the upgrading of residents’ consumption. The annual panel data of 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions from 2006 to 2020 are selected, and a fixed-effects model is constructed to analyze the effect of cross-border e-commerce development on residents’ consumption upgrade, using residents’ consumption upgrade as the explanatory variable, the degree of cross-border e-commerce development as the core explanatory variable, and the level of economic development, employment rate, the degree of Internet use,the level of technological development, and the residents’ consumer price index as the control variables. The influence of cross-border e-commerce development on the upgrading of residents’ consumption is analyzed, and the specific path of cross-border e-commerce development affecting the upgrading of residents’ consumption is analyzed using the mediating effect model. This paper concludes that: the development of cross-border e-commerce has significantly contributed to the upgrading of consumption in China;the level of cross-border e-commerce development in China is uneven, with obvious regional differences;there is an inherent mechanism of "industrial structure upgrading" as the mediating variable for the impact of cross-border e-commerce development on the upgrading of consumption of residents.Based on the obtained research findings, this paper puts forward the following policy recommendations in the context of China’s national conditions: first, promote the application of digital technology and form a digital ecosystem;second, optimize the business environment and improve the efficiency of cross-border e-commerce transactions;third;implement regional differentiation strategies and coordinate regional development;fourth, adhere to the innovation drive and enhance the competitiveness of cross-border e-commerce brands. |
