As China’s process of opening up gradually deepens,the need for reform and innovation continues to deepen.To give impetus to the economy,regional innovation is particularly important,and China’s free trade zones,as a kind of institutional innovation,will be able to influence regional development in many ways.In this context,studying the impact of FTZ,especially inland-type FTZ,on regional innovation capacity can,on the one hand,further test the role of inland-type FTZ construction on regional development and complement the related study of regional innovation capacity,and,on the other hand,provide reference for the next construction of FTZ,with both theoretical and practical significance.This paper firstly composes the relevant studies on FTZ and regional innovation,elaborates the relevant theories of FTZ and regional innovation,summarizes the current situation of the development of FTZ in China,especially inland-type FTZ,and lays down the realistic foundation and theoretical mechanism of this research.Secondly,in order to better measure the regional innovation capacity and improve the accuracy of the research findings,this paper constructs a system to measures the regional innovation capacity scores of each province through the entropy method,and applies them to the empirical analysis.Then this paper empirically tests the influence of inland FTZ on regional innovation capacity through double difference model,and concludes that inland FTZ have a positive effect on regional innovation capacity.Meanwhile,the robustness of the model is tested and proved by PSM-DID test and placebo test in this paper.Then the double difference method is applied to distinguish the FTZ into two groups of inland and coastal separately for empirical analysis,and it is found that namely,the policy effect of coastal-type FTZ is greater than that of inland areas.Then the policy effects of the five inland-type FTZ are tested by synthetic control method,and it is found that there is a difference in the impact on regional innovation capacity among inland-type FTZ.Finally,this paper puts forward the following suggestions: China should focus on the construction of inland-type FTZ and innovate the cooperation mechanism;play the role of governmental science and technology support to improve the science and technology innovation policy of FTZ;further optimize the industrial layout to focus on the development of high-tech industries;and pay attention to the functional positioning of FTZ themselves while absorbing the experience to develop according to local conditions.
