| Joseph Edkins is a British missionary and a sinologist.He compiled the first catalog of Chinese books collected by the Bodleian Library of the Oxford Universtiy,namely A Catalogue of Chinese Works in the Bodleian Library,which was published in 1876.This thesis,consisting of four parts,focuses on A Catalogue of Chinese Works in the Bodleian Library.Its scope,organizational and stylistic rules,and bibliographic information notes are to be systematically investigated.By uncovering its characteristics from varied perspectives,it must be beneficial for a further understanding of the Chinese book collection and cataloging at a early stage in the West.The first part introduces the complier,the catalogue,and the Serica Project website.Serica Project is a digital platform containing bibiliographic information of the Chinese book collection in the Bodleian Library.The second part analyses the scope and stylistic rule of this catalogue,by the comparison with the information on the Serica Project.In the third part,the idiosyncrasies and errors regarding the title,years,authors,editions,synopses,and Chinese character printings can be revealed.The last part deals with the influence of A Catalogue of Chinese Works in the Bodleian Library,and the realistic meaning of the overseas Chinese nationality catalogue studies. |
