| Alzheimer’s disease,commonly known as dementia,is a common neurodegenerative disease that occurs in people over 60 years of age.In recent years,the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease has been on the rise,but the lack of understanding of Alzheimer’s disease in our population has led to delays in diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and a serious stigma attached to the disease.Alzheimer’s disease has become a major disease and social problem that endangers the health of our population.The media constructs public awareness of the disease,and metropolis newspapers,as the media closest to daily life and the most marketable,play an important role in disseminating health information and promoting the public to adopt healthy behaviors.This paper systematically analyzes the communication characteristics of Alzheimer’s disease coverage in Southern Metropolis Daily from 2001 to 2021 by using content analysis and critical metaphor analysis.We examined the changes in the time,length,framework,topics,information sources,and tendency of Alzheimer’s disease coverage,analyzed the image of Alzheimer’s disease patients constructed by Southern Metropolis Daily,and compared the differences between it and scientific perceptions,so as to identify the problems in the dissemination of Alzheimer’s disease issues in Chinese metropolitan newspapers and put forward corresponding suggestions for improvement.The study found that the number of reports on Alzheimer’s disease in Southern Metropolis Daily fluctuated and was influenced by holidays;the main sources were media and family members,and authoritative sources such as doctors and experts were lacking;the tone of the reports was mainly negative,and the negative tendency was especially serious in the reports on personal cases;there were significant differences in the use of frames for different topics,among the topics of personal cases and lost elderly are dominated by fragmentary frameworks,and government actions and recent studies are dominated by thematic frameworks;There is a lack of popularization of science about Alzheimer’s disease prevention and diagnosis in the coverage of patients.Based on the quantitative analysis,the paper further qualitatively examined the image of Alzheimer’s disease patients portrayed in Southern Metropolis Daily and the stigma and metaphors that appear in the coverage.The study found stereotypes in the Southern Metropolis Daily’s coverage of Alzheimer’s disease,where patients are perceived as a burden on society and families;patients are silent and lack opportunities for self-representation,and they are described by doctors and relatives;the vast majority of patients reported are in the terminal stages of the disease,and patients’ physical and cognitive deficits and aberrant behaviors are highlighted portrayed.In the description of the disease,the metaphors of Alzheimer’s disease operate on two levels: firstly it is summarized as a powerful,cold,aggressive,insidious,and evil force,and secondly it is described as purposefully taking away a person’s spirit and life.Finally,in response to the problems of Alzheimer’s disease coverage in Nandu Metropolis Daily,the reportage suggestions were made to balance the sources,strengthen the professionalism of the content,avoid stigmatization and exaggeration of the coverage,and introduce the concept of constructive journalism,and put forward several thoughts on how to conduct constructive journalism on Alzheimer’s disease topics,such as in-depth coverage of the potential solution "respite service In addition,we introduce the concept of constructive journalism and propose some thoughts on how to conduct constructive news coverage of Alzheimer’s disease issues,such as in-depth coverage of the potential solution "respite services" and exploring restorative narrative strategies for Alzheimer’s disease coverage. |
