Since the 2010 DICE(Design,Innovation,Communication,Entertainment)Conference, the concept of game-based learning has attracted public attention, and there is no lack of educational game-based practice in the existing research on game-based learning. In the context of universal reading, the Communist Party of China and government attach great importance to children’s reading.Reading is an important way for children to perceive and analyze information, laying a solid foundation for children’s lifelong reading in China, and playing a pivotal role in the development of individuals and society. How to better promote children’s reading has become a hot issue of concern. Therefore, this study is based on grounded theory to explore children’s attitudes towards game-based elements in reading, analyze the impact of different game-based elements on children’s reading, and provide suggestions for optimizing children’s reading based on game-based elements. This study uses semi structured interviews to obtain data from 22 children on the relationship between gamification elements and reading, and uses grounded theory to analyze the impact of gamification elements on children’s reading.Through coding analysis of interview data, the effects of different gamification elements on four aspects of children’s reading were obtained:(1)The impact on children’s reading attitudes.Gamification element game breakthrough and badges affect reading mentality;Points, badges, and rankings affect reading interest tendencies;Game breakthrough and badges can force children to correct their reading attitude.(2)The impact on children’s reading experience. The combination of gamification and reading,as well as gamification elements such as points, avatars, virtual identities, game breakthroughs, badges, ranking boards, and grades, can make them feel the interesting experience of reading;Points, game breakthroughs, badges, leaderboards, ratings, and virtual identities help them experience a sense of achievement.(3)The impact on children’s reading habits.Gamification elements interfere with the reading atmosphere, and real-time updates of scores and rankings require the support of the network.Reading for children with insufficient reading concentration is a hidden danger;Game breakthrough, badges, grade records, reading and growth; The setting of game breakthrough questions can easily interfere with children’s initial reading of text.(4)The impact on children’s reading ability.Gamification element game breakthrough has an impact on children’s deep reading, reading efficiency, and reading effectiveness.Rankings can also affect reading efficiency.Based on the construction of a model of the impact of game-based elements on children’s reading, this paper proposes optimization strategies for improving children’s reading motivation and effectiveness based on game-based elements from four aspects: emphasizing game-based content construction, correcting reading attitudes, emphasizing game-based element matching, improving reading experience, upgrading and adding game-based element reading assistance technology to optimize reading habits, and adapting to psychological development and grading to set game-based elements. This study selects eight widely used gamification elements, constructs a model of their impact on children’s reading, explores their different impacts on children’s reading, and deepens theoretical research on the impact of gamification elements.According to the impact model, strategies for optimizing children’s reading based on game-based elements are proposed, which can help developers of game-based children’s reading software understand the impact of game-based elements on children’s reading and create a more core competitive game-based reading software; At the same time,it also provides a reference for teachers to integrate game-based elements into teaching based on children’s age and other characteristics in reading activities, and provides useful reference for the next step in promoting children’s reading through game-based elements.
