| Sexual assault on minors is not only a private issue,but also has important public significance.The presentation of news on such issue has related to the popularization of related laws and regulations,the development of the protection of rights and interests of minors,and public awareness of sex education.In addition,since the case of the civil servant whoring with underage girls in Xishui County,Guizhou Province was uncovered in 2009,media attention to such cases has increased.However,compared to the hot public opinions,the public has a low awareness of related laws,and sometimes the media also show social anomie while reporting.Based on the framework theory,this study explores the characteristics of the news framework of sexual assault on minors of Southern Metropolis Daily from 2009 to 2020.As a result,it is found that at the high-level frame,the issue frame focuses on the “case presentation” and “legal system”,the number of news grew by twists first,then gradually decreased and the concentrated reports are presented.As for the middle-level frame,most news sources rely on authoritative information,and clues become an important supplement.Besides,the news structure concentrates more on an in-depth investigation of events.As for the low-level frame,the news is mainly objective and neutral,the high-frequency words show attention to the victims.Through the characteristics of news on such issue,it is found that the Southern Metropolis Daily shows staged characteristics from case presentation to multi-dimensional perspective,and an emphasis on the interpretation of laws and regulations,which also reflects the shift of the basic function of the media for such issue from observation to constructive coordination.Generally speaking,the characteristics of news on such issue in Southern Metropolis Daily include: setting the agenda and proactively planning topical reports such as the Children’s Day;daring to continuously supervise,focusing on the key context of the case and long-term tracking;deepening significance,achieving mutual promotion of survey in many aspects and special investigation;coordinating dialogue,public discussion and targeted law popularization.On this basis,it is found that Southern Metropolis Daily places much importance on punishment for sexual assault while it ignores rehabilitation of the victim after trauma from the perspective of improving the news.In addition,the reports also have other shortcomings,such as the relatively superficial account of causality in the narrative of some reports,the trend to use words used to describe adults while describing minor victims,and overly detailed disclosure.All these problems are related to factors including the attributions and environment of the media,social environment,and laws as well as regulations.This study also proposed some suggestions for optimizing the shortcomings,such as the expansion of planning ideas,extending the scope of verification,and adherence to maximizing the interests of minors. |
