Abstract/Summary:
As a high-quality game material and educational tool, blocks are of great significance to explore their role in the development of children’s spatial and mathematical abilities. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a block game intervention in improving children’s spatial and mathematical abilities and to Further explore the relationship between them. This study randomly selected 63 third-grade students from an evening nursery class of a primary school in Fuzhou, and divided them into an intervention group(n = 30)and a blank group(n = 33).Children in the experimental group were given block game intervention 7 times for a period of 7 weeks, and the blank group went to class as usual. In order to measure the impact of intervention on children’s mathematical ability and spatial ability,we used the "Chinese Primary School Students’ Basic Mathematical Ability Test Scale(C-RSPMA)" and according to the classification of the spatial theory model of Newcombe and Shipley(2015)to select figure mosaic, mental rotation, perspective task and spatial orientation task, and pre-and post-tests were performed on children in the intervention group and the blank group.Repeated-measures ANOVA analysis of spatial ability and mathematical ability,we found that:(1)in spatial ability, the improvement of the intervention group was significantly higher than that of the blank group;further analysis of the dimensions of spatial ability, the intervention group was in the graphic mosaic task and psychological rotation. There is a significant improvement in tasks.(2)In terms of mathematical ability, the improvement of the intervention group and the blank group did not show a significant difference;further analysis of the various dimensions of mathematical ability showed that the improvement in the geometric logic part of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the blank group.Pearson correlation analysis was performed on spatial ability and mathematical ability, and we found that:(1)There was a significant positive correlation between spatial positioning ability and addition, subtraction, size comparison and numerical logic tasks.(2)There was a significant positive correlation between mental rotation ability and numerical logic and visual length tasks.Through multiple linear regression analysis,we found that:(1)Spatial positioning ability can significantly predict subtractive computing ability and size comparison ability.(2)Mental rotation ability can significantly predict visual length ability.(3)Image mosaic ability and perspective ability were not found to predict current mathematical ability. This study draws the following conclusions:(1)block game intervention can effectively promote the development of children’s spatial ability.(2)block game intervention can effectively promote the development of the geometric logic part of children’s mathematical ability.(3)Spatial ability is closely related to mathematical ability.According to the research results,we put forward the following suggestions:(1)Pay attention to the cultivation of children’s spatial ability and mathematical ability.(2)Introduce block games into more educational scenes to increase children’s access to block games.(3)Provide effective guidance for children to participate in block games.
