The concept of "mathematical modeling literacy" was introduced in the General High School Mathematics Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition,Revised 2020)and has been included in the scope of the recent college entrance examinations, which is widely used in modern mathematics and other scientific research fields and plays a key role in students’ overall development. In order to understand the current situation of mathematical modeling literacy level of high school students, sophomore students are selected as the research subjects, who have already had a certain understanding of mathematical modeling in the first year of high school, and in the second year of high school, their attribution psychology has changed dramatically and their learning initiative has increased significantly, which is a critical period for developing mathematical modeling literacy. This paper focuses on three aspects: what is the current situation of sophomore students’ mathematical modeling literacy level? What are the factors affecting the level of mathematical modeling literacy of sophomore students? How to improve the level of mathematical modeling literacy of sophomore students? After a systematic review of related literature and with reference to the existing studies on the assessment of mathematical modeling literacy level,423 sophomore students and 4 front-line mathematics teachers in a school in Henan Province were selected as the research subjects, and the current situation of sophomore students’ mathematical modeling literacy level was investigated and studied by using the test paper method, questionnaire survey method and interview method. The current situation of sophomore students’ mathematical modeling literacy level was as follows:(1)most sophomore students were at level two in the overall level of mathematical modeling literacy;the gender difference of sophomore students was not significant in the overall level of mathematical modeling literacy, while sophomore students of different subjects showed significant differences;the distribution of sophomore students’ mathematical modeling literacy level showed a strong correlation with their usual grades.(2)Most sophomore students were at Level 2 in each dimension of mathematical modeling literacy;gender differences in each performance dimension of mathematical modeling literacy were not significant among sophomore students, while sophomore students in different subjects showed significant differences;dimensions of mathematical modeling literacy of sophomore students showed a strong correlation with their usual grades.Through the analysis of the survey results and interviews and other related contents, the factors influencing the level of mathematical modeling literacy of sophomore students were summarized.Among them, the internal factors are(1)sophomore students’ knowledge of mathematical modeling,(2)sophomore students’ emotion toward mathematical modeling,(3)sophomore students’ ability of mathematical modeling,and(4)sophomore students’ creativity level. The external factors are(1)teachers’ teaching styles;(2)teachers’ own mathematical modeling cultivation;and(3)the school’s emphasis on students’ mathematical modeling literacy development.Based on the above analysis of the current situation and the influencing factors, the teaching strategies to cultivate the level of mathematical modeling literacy of sophomore students are proposed:(1)infiltrating modeling ideas in teaching to improve students’ modeling ability;(2)creating mathematical problem situations to cultivate students’ open-mindedness;(3)optimizing teaching methods to enhance students’ modeling experience;(4)strengthening teachers’ professionalism to improve their modeling cognition;(5)developing high-quality modeling cases to cultivate students’ modeling emotion;and(6)integrating various assessment methods to develop students’ modeling literacy.
