A Study On The Relationship Among Parenting Style,Self-esteem,social Support And Depression Of Junior Middle School Students:A Chain Mediation Model

Objective: To test the role of self-esteem and social support in the relationship between family rearing patterns and depression,that is,whether self-esteem and social support play a chain intermediary role in junior high school students’ depression.Methods:By means of questionnaire survey,807 junior middle school students from three middle schools in Honghe Prefecture,Yunnan Province were randomly selected to complete the self-evaluation of Depression Scale(CES-D),Simple Parenting Style Questionnaire(s-EMBU-c),Self-esteem Scale(SES)and Adolescent Social Support Scale and fill in the corresponding demographic information.The data of 728 valid samples were analyzed by SPSS26.0 and Hayes(2013).Results:(1)There are significant gender differences in junior middle school students’ depression,showing that girls score significantly higher than boys;There is a significant gender difference in the father’s refusal of junior middle school students,which shows that the score of boys is significantly higher than that of girls,and there is no significant gender difference in the other dimensions of parenting style;There is a significant gender difference in junior high school students’ self-esteem,which shows that boys score higher than girls;There is a significant gender difference in junior high school students’ social support,that is,girls score significantly higher than boys.(2)There is no significant difference in junior middle school students’ self-esteem,depression and social support.There are significant differences in the parenting styles of junior middle school students,which show that the scores of father’s rejection dimension in grade one and grade two are significantly higher than those in grade three;The score of mother’s refusal dimension in grade one is significantly higher than that in grade two and grade three,and the score of mother’s refusal dimension in grade two is significantly higher than that in grade three.The score of father’s emotional warmth dimension in grade one is significantly lower than that in grade three and grade two.The score of emotional warmth dimension of mothers in the first grade was significantly lower than that in the third grade;The score of father’s overprotection dimension in grade two was significantly higher than that in grade three.The score of mother’s overprotection dimension in grade one is significantly higher than that in grade three,and the score of mother’s overprotection dimension in grade two is significantly higher than that in grade three and grade one.(3)There is no significant difference in depression among junior middle school students.There are significant differences in emotional warmth parenting styles of junior middle school students’ mothers from different places of origin,that is,the score of emotional warmth dimension of urban junior middle school students’ mothers is significantly higher than that of rural junior middle school students.There are significant differences in the self-esteem of junior high school students from different places of origin,which shows that the scores of junior high school students from towns are significantly higher than those from rural areas.The social support of junior high school students from different places of origin is significantly different,that is,the scores of junior high school students from cities and towns are significantly higher than those from rural areas.(4)There is a significant correlation between parenting style,self-esteem,social support and depression.Parental rejection is positively correlated with depression and negatively correlated with self-esteem and social support.Parental emotional warmth is negatively correlated with depression,and positively correlated with self-esteem and social support.Parental overprotection is positively correlated with depression,and negatively correlated with self-esteem and social support.Self-esteem is positively correlated with social support.Self-esteem and social support are negatively correlated with depression.(5)Self-esteem and social support have a chain mediating effect between father’s rejection and depression,with the effect ratio of 9.48% and the chain mediating effect ratio of 20.19%;Self-esteem and social support have a chain mediating effect between mother’s refusal and depression,accounting for 10.71% of the effects,and the chain mediating effect accounts for 22.86% of the total indirect effects.Self-esteem and social support play a chain intermediary role between father’s emotional warmth and depression,accounting for 14.08% of the effects,and the chain intermediary accounts for 17.74% of the total indirect effects.Self-esteem and social support play a chain intermediary role between mother’s emotional warmth and depression,accounting for14.78% of the effects,and the chain intermediary accounts for 18.12% of the total indirect effects.Conclusion: Parental rejection,self-esteem and social support can significantly predict depression,and self-esteem and social support play a chain intermediary role between parental rejection and depression.Father’s emotional warmth,self-esteem and social support can significantly negatively predict depression,and self-esteem and social support play a chain intermediary role between father’s emotional warmth and depression,which is of positive significance for the prevention and intervention of depression.
