| Sports has become an important symbol of social civilization and an indispensable part of human daily life.The internationalization of sports makes news media report become the primary tool for people of different nationalities,races or cultural backgrounds to appreciate and exchange sports information and share interests.The external publicity of sports news report has its own distinctive characteristic besides the general characteristics of general news report.As for the Olympic Games,a world-famous sports event,we should not only take into account the characteristics of the mass media,but also in-depth analysis of the particularity of the Olympic news report in order to achieve the expected publicity effect,on which the researches have strong theoretical and practical significance.This article is based on the basic theories of news values and frames in both Chinese and Western journalism,as well as knowledge and practice related to sports news reporting.Taking the only national English-language newspaper “China Daily”as an example,this article studies its characteristics in reporting on sports events at the Olympics.Firstly,using content analysis and guided by the theory of news frames,this article provides an overview and analysis of the quantity,types,genres,reporting methods,and perspectives of its news coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics from the aspects of reporting themes,structures,and wording.Secondly,using in-depth interviews with its editors,reporters,and readers,this article explores the reasons for the formation of these characteristics from three perspectives: media nature and positioning,editorial resources,technology and management,and language and cultural differences.The content of the interviews covers reporting characteristics,media advantages,and problems in reporting.It tries to approach the reason from the nature and positioning of the media,the technology and management of resource collection and editing,and differences in language and culture.Through research,the conclusion drawn in this article is that the characteristics of “China Daily” news coverage of the Rio Olympics are influenced by various factors such as the nature and positioning of the media,the technology and management of resource collection and editing,and differences in language and culture between China and foreign countries.In future development,attention should be paid to the value differences between China and the West,reporting methods,and the selection of news events.It is also necessary to fully understand the cultural background and personality of readers.At the same time,we should draw extensive experience and inspiration from the reporting techniques of Western sports news media,especially in the era of new media integration.It is even more necessary to learn to use new media,focus on reporting content,and do a good job in media operations.Finally,this article proposes targeted improvement suggestions,such as combining authority with flexibility,focusing on readers’ needs,striving for editorial resources,enhancing editorial technical capabilities,introducing market mechanisms,and strengthening news user operations and user education. |
