| The 32 nd Tokyo Olympics in 2020,the first postponed world sporting event to be held in the grip of the new crown epidemic, provided a fresh perspective for domestic and international media to report on,as the world’s nations used it to launch a showdown at the top of public opinion, and received a great deal of attention from sports fans around the world. With the ongoing friction between Australia and China in recent years, and with all the constraints of the epidemic prevention and control conditions, the specificity of this China-related coverage by News Australia also reflected how the Australian media viewed the Chinese sports legion’s trip to Tokyo. This article takes the texts related to China-related coverage of the Tokyo Olympics on Australian news websites from January 1,2020 to August 31,2022 as the research object.Based on manual screening and collation,we use case study method and content analysis method to explore the commonalities and characteristics of China-related coverage of the last three Summer Olympics on Australian news network,so as to more comprehensively explore the China-related coverage of the Tokyo Olympics. The study also explores the characteristics of China-related coverage of the Tokyo Olympics, explaining the reasons for the characteristics of the coverage in terms of composition, angles and methods of coverage, and summarising the problems of China-related coverage on Australian news networks, with a view to exploring new ways of communicating Chinese sports. The study found that the Australian news network provided multiple perspectives on China’s overseas coverage, but remained biased towards China throughout the Tokyo Olympics, with obvious attempts to stigmatise China. The reasons for this are partly due to multiple historical and political factors such as the "Australia-New Zealand-US" alliance and political party struggles within Australia, and partly due to the "cold political and hot economic" international trade relationship between China and Australia and the long-standing social and cultural differences. On the whole, the Australian news network’s coverage of China during the Tokyo Olympics was problematic in terms of reporting style and philosophy, which also provides new thoughts for the future dissemination of China’s overseas business.Taking the special time of the global new crown epidemic as the entry point, this paper innovates on the research perspectives related to China-related coverage of the Olympic Games, providing reference values for the shaping of China’s overseas image in the new era and the construction of a complete foreign discourse system, with a view to improving the accuracy of China’s foreign communication of sports culture in the post-epidemic era. |
