Reading is the foundation of learning and a necessary way for people to become lifelong learners.The introduction of the Measures for the Management of Extracurricular Reading Materials in Primary and Secondary Schools and the Chinese Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 edition)both reflect the state’s emphasis on students’ extracurricular reading.Junior high school is the critical period of transition from primary school to high school,and junior high school students are not mature in physical and mental development,so teachers need to provide more scaffolding teaching guidance in extracurricular reading,and the "double reduction" policy also provides a good educational ecological environment for extracurricular reading.In order to understand the current situation of junior high school students’ extracurricular reading under the background of "double reduction",this study selected 307 students and 7 teachers from a middle school in Tianjin to conduct an empirical study.The research shows that,at present,junior high school students’ extracurricular reading problems mainly exist in the following five aspects:in terms of reading motivation,students’ internal motivation of extracurricular reading needs to be improved;Teachers’ value cognition of extracurricular reading needs to be adjusted;Parents’ utilitarian concept of extracurricular reading needs to be corrected.In terms of reading input,it is difficult to guarantee the time and quality of extracurricular reading.The planning and content of teachers’ extracurricular reading are confined to the examination.In terms of reading preference,most students’ extracurricular reading preference focuses on recreational and superficial reading,and lacks immersive reading experience.Teachers do not pay enough attention to the original reading in the selection of extracurricular reading texts.In terms of reading strategies,students’ reading methods are exam-oriented and teachers’ guidance is insufficient.Teachers lack continuous attention and feedback during extracurricular reading.In terms of reading environment,parents’ utilitarian purpose is strong,but the family reading environment is insufficient.The creation form of reading partnership is single,which fails to exert the positive influence of partnership on extracurricular reading.The utilization rate of school book resources is low,and the reading activity is heavy on form and light on effect.In addition,combined with the analysis of qualitative interview data,this study believes that: in terms of reading motivation,students’ fear of difficulties causes their extracurricular reading initiative to fail to give full play to;Teachers’ tendency of exam-oriented education is insufficient to drive students’ intrinsic motivation of extracurricular reading.Parents,dominated by the utilitarian concept,lack correct and positive guidance to students’ reading interest.In terms of reading input,home-school pursuit of test-taking effect squeezes students’ extracurricular reading time in a disguised way;Teachers’ instrumental rationality leads to insufficient demonstration of humanistic value in extracurricular reading.In terms of reading preference,students’ rational choice and judgment of reading materials are limited,and teachers’ positive guidance is insufficient.The fragmentation of reading brought by informatization leads to the insufficiency of students’ immersion reading experience.Teachers’ improper guidance has reduced extracurricular reading to pseudo-reading.In the aspect of reading strategies,teachers’ extracurricular reading methods are exam-oriented,which leads to students’ lack of correct reading methods.The lack of teachers’ support in extracurricular reading makes it difficult for students to guarantee the quality of reading.In terms of reading environment,the utilitarian purpose of parents narrows the value of extracurricular reading in the family.Teachers’ lack of understanding of the positive influence of reading partnership results in their failure to exert the positive influence.The main reason for junior high school students’ extracurricular reading problems is the insufficient use of high quality books due to the formalization of extracurricular reading in schools.In order to improve the current situation of junior high school students’ extracurricular reading,this study suggests the following five aspects: In terms of reading motivation,actively dispel students’ fear of difficulties and stimulate the full play of extracurricular reading initiative;Teachers should change the concept of exam-oriented education and guide extracurricular reading to return to the original intention;Parents should change the utilitarian concept to cultivate students’ active interest in reading;In terms of reading input,families and schools should change their educational concepts and set up special time for extracurricular reading.Teachers should pay attention to humanistic value and actively construct extracurricular reading guidance system.In terms of reading preference,home and school should actively guide students to read good books and cultivate students’ rational choice of reading books.Relevant subject departments should continue to purify the network space and actively serve extracurricular reading;Teachers should devote themselves to using classroom teaching to leverage extracurricular reading to cultivate students’ humanistic spirit.In terms of reading strategies,teachers should actively explore effective reading strategies to cultivate students’ correct reading methods;Teachers should actively play their supporting role in extracurricular reading.Teachers should take the initiative to teach students about dyslexia even if they do not ask for help.In terms of reading environment,parents should re-examine the value of extracurricular reading and actively construct a personal reading family environment.Teachers should construct reading partnership actively to strengthen its positive influence on extracurricular reading;Schools should continue to optimize the book resources to carry out effective extracurricular reading activities to cultivate campus reading culture.
