In July 2021,the General Office of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council issued the "Opinions on Further Reducing Students’ Homework Burdens and Off-campus Training Burdens in Compulsory Education"(hereinafter referred to as "Opinions").The "Opinions" make it clear that the burden of homework and off-campus training for students in the compulsory education stage(hereinafter referred to as the "double reduction")is further reduced,and it is proposed to meet the diverse needs of students,adhere to strict governance,and comprehensively regulate off-campus training.training behavior.In February 2022,the Anyang Municipal Bureau of Education issued the "Notice on Improving the Quality of Education and Teaching under the Background of the " Double Reduction " Policy",proposing that schools are the main position of education and teaching in order to establish a good education ecology,and promote the all-round development of students.Cui Yunhuo(2022)mentioned that the double reduction policy is an important example of the involution of compulsory education in national governance.In response to the proposition of the era of double reduction,solving the efficiency of classroom teaching in schools and effective extracurricular guidance are two major themes.Qian Chunxia(2022)believed that especially in the context of double reduction,the total amount of students’ after-school homework will decrease,and teachers’ homework design,homework evaluation and correction will pay more attention to “reducing quantity and improving quality”.Push forward the further development of basic education.The English Curriculum Standard stipulates that junior middle school students have accumulated more than 150,000 words of English extracurricular reading,and it is essential to carry out extracurricular reading.In 2019,the English reform of the Henan Senior High School Entrance Examination was carried out.Grammar single-choice questions were deleted from the test papers,and discourse fill-in-the-blank questions were added,focusing on students’ English reading comprehension level.Based on the content and orientation of scholars and policies,it is necessary and meaningful to investigate students’ English extracurricular reading in Double Reduction background,and to pay attention to teachers’ instructions on English extracurricular reading in Double Reduction background.This research is mainly aimed at the investigation and research of junior middle school students’ English extracurricular reading under the double reduction policy.Based on Input hypothesis theory,multiple intelligence theory and autonomous learning theory,this study attempts to answer the following questions:(1)What is the overall situation of English extracurricular reading among junior middle school students in Anyang? Reading intentions,reading time,reading strategies,reading obstacles,teacher instructions,and reading materials are six dimensions.What are the existing problems in English extracurricular reading for junior middle school students?(2)What are the differences in English extracurricular reading among junior high school students by gender and grade?(3)What are the measures of teachers and students towards the double reduction policy?This research takes teachers and students of Anyang 66 Middle School and Anyang 32 Middle School as the research objects,using questionnaires and interviews to investigate the English extracurricular reading situation of junior middle school students under the background of the double reduction policy.A total of 310 questionnaires were distributed and 310 were recovered.299 copies were valid,and the valid rate was 96.5%.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 6 English teachers,4 junior high school students and two administrators,recorded with mobile phones.The questionnaires were input into SPSS(22.0)for analysis,the interview recordings were converted into text,and the transcripts were combined.It can be learned about the English extracurricular reading situation of junior high school students under the background of double reduction,and explored the ways of effective English extracurricular reading.Through data analysis,the following conclusions are drawn: 1.Under the background of double reduction,the amount of English written homework of junior high school students is reduced,and the English extracurricular reading of junior high school students is at a medium level.Most junior high school students have mastered reading strategies and their English reading outside the classroom has improved.However,the goals of junior high school students’ extracurricular reading are not clear and lack appropriate English reading materials.2.There is no significant gender difference in English extracurricular reading,but there are significant differences in extracurricular reading materials,extracurricular obstacles and reading strategies between grade 7 and grade 8 students.3.The school leaders implement the Double Reduction Policy.The English teachers interviewed understand the double deduction policy,reduce the amount of written homework after class,and encourage students to use their spare time and after-school service time to read after class,but there is a lack of rich after-class reading activities.Students actively participate in the English extracurricular reading activities under the double reduction policy,and the extracurricular reading is carried out by using the extended service time after class.
