As China’s basic education reform continues to progress,educational changes led by "core literacy" have become an important academic research hotspot in the field of education.At present,the Ministry of Education has promoted the incorporation of physical education and health core literacy into the general objectives of the physical education curriculum at senior secondary and compulsory education levels,which proves that China attaches great importance to students’ physical education and health core literacy.To equip students with these core literacies,it is essential to provide them with a constant supply of quality physical education teachers.The pre-service physical education teachers are the source of output for this workforce.Therefore,the aim of this study was to explore the structural system of pre-service PE teachers’ core literacy and to develop a scientific measurement scale that could quantitatively assess the level of core literacy.Firstly,the current status of research on the core literacy of pre-service PE teachers was investigated through the literature method,and it was found that no research on the measurement of the core literacy of pre-service PE teachers has been conducted in China,while there are many overseas research results.Secondly,through a combination of qualitative research and quantitative analysis,the study explored the structure of pre-service PE teachers’ core literacy and developed the Pre-service PE Teachers’ Core Literacy Scale with good reliability and validity.Finally,the mixed research findings were summarised and the following conclusions were drawn:1.In the qualitative study,firstly,first-hand primary data were formed through in-depth interviews with three university physical education teacher educators,five frontline physical education teachers and researchers,seven frontline primary and secondary school physical education teachers and ten pre-service physical education teachers,and then the primary data text was analysed through open coding→principal axis coding→selective coding→theoretical model reliability test,resulting in six main categories,17 categoryisations and 53 conceptualisation.The initial questionnaire was constructed from the coding results and evaluated by experts to produce a pre-research questionnaire containing 48 items in 6 dimensions.2.In the quantitative analysis,214 data packets were created from the first pre-study,and these data were subjected to item analysis,reliability and construct validity tests to create a formal questionnaire with 37 items in 6 dimensions.The formal research data was then used to form 650 data packets to test the reliability and validity of the structure of the questionnaire,and finally the Core Literacy Scale for Pre-service Physical Education Teachers was developed.3.The Pre-service Physical Education Teacher Core Literacy Scale reflects the image of a pre-service physical education teacher who has adapted to the needs of the times,and can be used as a reference system for the professional development of individual pre-service physical education teachers,as well as a reference evaluation index for the requirements of pre-service physical education teachers in universities.The scale is therefore an important achievement in the context of educational reform.
