Since the establishment of the professional degree of Master of Education by the Academic Degrees Office of China in 1996,China has achieved remarkable results in the enrollment,practical ability improvement of Education Master.As of October 4,2022,the enrollment institutions of Master of Education in China have reached 190(including 185 degree authorizations).However,compared with developed countries,China’s degree of Master of Education has not been established for a long time and lacks the necessary experience accumulation and knowledge reserve,and there are still some problems in the actual cultivation process of master’s degree in education,especially it is difficult to enhance the professional practice ability of Master of Education.At the same time,there are certain difficulties in the role of external tutors,who have an important guiding role in the enhancement of professional practice ability of M.Ed.Therefore,this study adopts a mixed research method combining textual analysis,questionnaire survey and interview method to investigate the current situation of the role of external supervisors in guiding the improvement of professional practice ability of M.Ed.and to explore the existing problems and causes in order to provide corresponding countermeasure suggestions.Firstly,this study analyzed the training programs and regulations of educational internship in nine "double first-class" teacher training institutions,and compared the role of external supervisors in the practical teaching and the growth of professional practice ability of M.Ed.in five dimensions: course structure and credits,practical teaching content,training methods,assessment methods,and the duties of external supervisors.The comparison and analysis were conducted on the contingent state of the guidance role of the external supervisors in the practical teaching and the growth of professional practice ability.Secondly,through the quantitative analysis of 196 questionnaires collected,the current situation of the role of external supervisors on the practice ability of full-time M.Ed.students was described from three dimensions of teaching practice ability,management practice ability and teaching and research practice ability,and 31 three-level dimensions of the current situation of external supervisors’ guidance on the improvement of professional practice ability of M.Ed.It is found that the supervision level of external supervisors is in the middle to upper level,and there is still more room for improvement.Finally,it analyzed the causes of the dilemma that external mentors play the role of guidance by combining interviews with external mentors,administrators of training institutions and M.Ed.From the level of external supervisors,there are mainly problems such as lack of awareness of responsibility in cultivating M.Ed.and poor team of external supervisors;from the level of M.Ed.individuals,there are mainly problems such as lack of initiative,reflective spirit and lack of understanding of educational internship program.Based on the above analysis,in order to better play the guiding role of external supervisors in the improvement of professional practice ability of full-time M.Ed.students,improve the cultivation of full-time M.Ed.students in China,and enhance the quality of M.Ed.training,this study proposes corresponding countermeasures from four subjects: government,M.Ed.training institutions,external supervisors,and M.Ed.students.
