The internationalization of education has enabled higher education institutions to engage in global affairs and in global governance through educational and non-educational means.As an innovative approach to internationalization,the borderland-located university,located in border areas,has the strategic mission of promoting China’s ideas and is a necessary means for building a human community with a shared future(HCSF).The role of borderland-located universities in cultivating and advocating for the HCSF is of great significance to the building of an HCSF.This study adopts a case study approach to examine the international communication activities related to the HCSF of Xishuangbanna Vocational and Technical College(XVTC)based on three perspectives — subject,process,and effectiveness — and on in-depth interviews with 45 students and faculty members at XVTC,supplemented by local observations and content analysis.The purpose of this study is to understand and describe the systematic process and complete picture of the cultivation and advocacy of the HCSF of the borderlandlocated university and to provide theoretical support and guidance for the borderland-located university to promote the HCSF and contribute to the building of an HCSF.This study finds that XVTC has made conscious and active attempts to cultivate and advocate for the HCSF,with some concrete results.However,it also identifies challenges such as impenetrable understanding,insufficient awareness,inadequate means,and even poor results,mainly due to the need for scientifically valid evaluation methods for communication activities.Based on these findings,this study suggests ways to deepen the understanding of the HCSF,to increase the awareness of the promotion of the HCSF,to optimize the means of the cultivation and advocacy for the HCSF,and to improve the effectiveness of the international communication about the HCSF.This study presents a systematic and comprehensive theoretical framework of the interaction between borderland-located universities and the HCSF,highlighting the critical role of borderland-located universities in cultivating and advocating for the HCSF and in building an HCSF,and describing the form of this role.This framework not only enriches the research on the HCSF and borderland-located universities and advances the related theories of international communication and international education,but also provides practical strategies and methods for various organizations and individuals to promote the HCSF and contribute to the building of an HCSF.
