From the proposal in 2012 to the realization in 2020,after eight years of efforts,China has successfully achieved the goal and task of poverty alleviation,and the poverty-stricken population in China has been lifted out of poverty.This achievement has attracted worldwide attention,but the fruits of victory have not come easily,and we need to take good care of them.Although poor families have been lifted out of poverty in their material life,it takes time to test the effect of spiritual poverty.It needs to be clear whether the children can form the negative cultural aspiration and get rid of poverty.Physical education is an indispensable part of school education and it has irreplaceable advantages in improving students’ psychological health through its unique classroom environment and content.By introducing the variable of football training,this study conducted a 16-week football training intervention experiment on the poor students who belong to the second grade of Gaodu Middle School in Zezhou County,to explore the impact of football training on the mental health of poor students in rural middle school.The results are as follows.(1)It showed that in terms of the detection rate of mental health problems,the detection rate of poor students in rural middle schools is higher than that of non-poor students.There were significant differences between poor students and non-poor students in seven dimensions including anxiety,loneliness,self-blame,allergies,terror and impulsive tendencies,and physical symptoms but there were no differences in learning anxiety and terror.There are gender differences in the mental health status of poor students.Boys have better mental health in terms of anxiety,self-blame,physical symptoms,and terror than girls while girls have better mental health in terms of impulse than boys.Meanwhile,students have more problems with learning anxiety,loneliness,and allergy and there is no gender difference.(2)Football training can have a significant improvement effect on poor students’ learning anxiety,human anxiety,loneliness tendency,self-blame tendency,and impulse tendency and it can significantly improve physical symptoms as well.However,there is no significant improvement in the two dimensions of allergy tendency and fear tendency.In contrast,football has significantly improved the dimension of learning anxiety for non-poor students only.(3)There are gender differences in improving the mental health of poor students through football training.In terms of allergy tendencies and overall conditions,girls’ mental health improvement is better than that of boys,and in the dimension of impulsive tendency,girls do not have significant improvements compared with boys.
