Early education is valued by many parents as a good foundation for the healthy development of young children, but due to the traditional culture of Chinese society, people are ashamed to talk about sex, resulting in early sex education for children being neglected.According to some studies,"Sexuality education is an issue that cannot be ignored during the developmental process. The key periods for sex education are infancy and adolescence, and it is important to seize these two important stages of physical and mental development to provide sex education to promote the healthy growth of young people." Many studies on family sex education in China show that most parents have positive attitudes towards sex education, but only a small percentage have actually conducted family sex education. The reasons for the inconsistency in parents’ attitudes and behaviours are that there are some dilemmas in the implementation of sex education by parents, such as misunderstanding and misconceptions about sex education, shyness to talk about sex,and not knowing how to educate their children about sex.In view of the current situation and dilemmas of parents’implementation of sex education, this study explores how social work can provide support for early sex education in families, enhance parents’ capacity for sex education and promote children’s healthy growth. This study takes the group "Talking about sex" as an example.Through the four group activities, the group members’ knowledge, skills and attitudes towards sex education were enhanced, and scientific concepts and methods of sex education were conveyed, thus improving the sex education environment of young children’s families.Through pre-group interviews, the author designed and implemented the group activities to address the common dilemmas and needs of the group members, taking into account the sexuality education issues that tend to arise in early childhood and the learning patterns of adult parents. The group activities were divided into four sessions and were based on comprehensive sexuality education knowledge and enrichment theory, with a step-by-step approach to desensitisation, scientific knowledge, methods of sexual safety education and awareness of one’s own sexual attitudes. The evaluation found that through the group work interventions, the parents’ shyness to talk about sex improved, their understanding of sex education became more comprehensive, they acquired certain knowledge and methods of sex education, and they achieved positive results in their family practice. The results of the study show that the group work approach to early sex education in families has achieved good results, parents’ satisfaction with the social worker and the group is high, their attitude towards sex has become more open and their sense of sexual shame has decreased, the level of sex education of the parent group members has been enhanced through the four group activities, which has laid the foundation for parents to continue to implement good sex education in the process of children’s growth and is highly consistent with the core concept of social work of helping people to help themselves. This practical study takes parents as the target group, emphasises the important role of parents in the implementation of children’s sex education, enriches the practical model and experience of social work intervention in the field of sex education, and proposes practical recommendations for reference. |
