Promoting the return of orphaned children to their families is an important issue of concern for social security and child welfare in China, and child adoption has become the primary way to help orphaned children return to their families,in which adoption assessment,as an essential part of the whole adoption process, plays a decisive role in the success of adoption.Social workers,as qualified professionals, will protect the legal rights and interests of adoptive families and adopted children from being infringed. However, since adoption assessment is still in the developmental stage, the role and service content of social workers are not clear, which also affects the self-perception and positioning of social workers. Therefore, this study tries to explore the role perceptions and practices of social workers in the process of adoption assessment based on role theory, try to find out the ideal and realistic gap between the natural and actual roles of social workers, clarify the role distance and role contradictions that social workers feel in the process, and finally try to propose role adjustment strategies to help social workers better adapt to multiple roles. The study adopts a qualitative approach. This study mainly adopts a qualitative research method, through in-depth interviews with social workers and adoptive families who participated in the evaluation,as well as on-site observations of the author’s actual work,to collect and organize the research data, and then categorize and code the interview data to derive the important points of different interviewees, analyze the meaning and value judgment implied behind them, and finally summarize and present the social workers’The study found that in the process of adoption assessment, the interview data were categorized and coded. The study found that the role cognition process of social workers in the adoption assessment process went through three main stages, namely,at the beginning of the assessment work, social workers were full of external role expectations and self-perception of ideals,to the middle of the practice experience, when they found that there were role distances and contradictions between ideals and reality, and then to the later stage, when they accepted themselves and sought internal and external balancing strategies for role adjustment. This transformation process shows that social workers’ role perception and practice is a dynamic process, which will be influenced by personal, organizational, and interpersonal relationships and produce interactive changes. Therefore, social workers need to actively communicate with all parties in the assessment process, establish a good interactive relationship, and seek appropriate role adjustment strategies to help them assume the responsibility of multiple roles. In this regard, the author proposes several suggestions for social workers to carry out role adjustment, such as strengthening self-worth and emotion, enhancing organizational and interpersonal relationship construction, and pursuing professional skills and knowledge expansion. The results of the study show that the participation of social workers in adoption assessment will be of great importance to the individual social worker, the social work profession itself, adoptive families and adopted children, and the adoption assessment system as a whole. It will help social workers to feel their self-worth and improve their professional skills;it will help to improve the public’s awareness of the social work profession and the trust of government departments;it will help to provide professional services for adoptive families and adopted children;and it will help to improve the construction of the adoption assessment system and enhance the efficiency and objectivity of the services. In addition, the author also puts forward several suggestions for improving the current situation of adoption assessment work, hoping to help promote the further development and improvement of adoption assessment work in China.
