Residents’ political trust is the core of the normal operation of state institutions and an important factor affecting residents’ active participation in political life.At present,my country is in a new period of historical intersection, and enhancing political trust is of great significance to the second centenary goal. However, the general decline of political trust in the world has become an indisputable fact. The academic community has paid great attention to political trust, but has not paid enough attention to the issue of how corruption perception and subjective well-being affect political trust.Under the background of comprehensively and strictly governing the party,it is of theoretical and practical significance to study the specific mechanism by which corruption perception and subjective well-being affect residents’ political trust. This study uses the data of the Seventh Wave World Values Survey to analyze the current situation of Chinese residents’ perception of corruption, subjective well-being and political trust, and the impact of corruption perception and subjective well-being on Chinese residents’ political trust. This study found that: firstly, the political trust of Chinese residents is generally at a high level, and the central and local levels are characterized by a differential pattern.Secondly, the subjective well-being of Chinese residents is generally at ahigh level.Thirdly,Corruption perceptions are generally at a low level, but local and public officials are highly involved in corruption.Fourthly, corruption perception and subjective well-being have a significant impact on political trust.Corruption perception has a significant negative effect on the political trust of Chinese residents, and the improvement of subjective well-being has a significant positive effect on the political trust of Chinese residents.Fifth, subjective well-being plays a mediating effect between corruption perception andpolitical trust. On the basis of empirical analysis, this paper draws the following discussion results: Firstly, the current situation of corruption perception and political trust is in a "different order" state, which maybe attributed to the corruption of grassroots personnel, which makesthe public lose confidence in local governments. But in their hearts, they hold hope for the central government that is far away fromthem, and yearn for the central government to change the current status quo.Secondly, the "Asian Exclusion Theory" or the "East Asian Paradox" is not universal, and corruption may affect my country’s political trust from economic, political and social aspects.Thirdly, corruption may affect political trust by reducing residents’ incomeand weakening residents’ sense of well-being.Therefore,this study takesthe local government as the starting point, and explores the path ofimproving political trust from the perspective of reducing corruptionperception and improving subjectivewell-being. |
