Research purpose:Cluster set training refers to the method of adding short rest in a set to help relieve the acute fatigue in resistance training,so as to improve the overall quality of movement.Variable resistance exercise is a practice pattern in which part of a fixed load is replaced by the resistance of elastic bands or chains, thus providing variable resistance during the movement. This study aims to investigate the acute effect of different cluster set on average velocity and average power in squat exercise with elastic bands.Methods:9 trained adults(3 women and 6 men)were selected as subjects.Subjects were involved performing variable resistance squats across 3 different set configurations:traditional(3 sets x 12 with 120-second rest between sets),cluster set 1(3 sets X(6+6)with 40-second intraset rest and 80-second rest between sets),cluster set 2(3 groups x(4+4+4)with 20-second intraset rest and 80-second rest between sets). The load was equalized in all conditions(70%1RM)and 20%of the load was provided by elastic bands. The average velocity and average power of squats were measured by the Gymaware system.Two-factor analysis of variance was used to statistically compare the indicators of different training modes(traditional VS cluster 1 VS cluster 2)and different sets(set 1 VS set 2 VS set 3),and the significance level was set as P<0.05.Descriptive analysis was conducted on the variation trend of velocity in each group(1-12 repetitions). The results were as follows:(1)Compared with the traditional mode, both cluster modes significantly increased the average velocity and power in almost all groups(P<0.05,except that the increase of clustering mode in the first group did not reach a significant level),and there was no significant difference between them.(2)In the traditional mode, the average velocity and average power of the third set were significantly lower than those of the first and second sets(P<0.05),but there was no significant difference between the three groups in the two clustering modes;(3)In the traditional mode, the average velocity and power of squats continued to decrease within a set,and there would be a significant decrease between the 7th and 9th repetitions, but this trend did not occur in the two clustering modes. The research conclusions are as follows:(1)Compared with the traditional mode, the group training method can significantly improve the overall speed and power of variable resistance squat, but there is no difference between the two cluster modes;(2)In two cluster modes, the performance of speed and explosive power did not decrease with the increase of the number of groups, but the performance of these two indications would significantly decrease with the increase of in the traditional mode;(3)The speed and power of the movements can be maintained at a relatively consistent level in the two cluster modes, while in the traditional group, the performance of these two aspects will decrease with the increase of the number of repetitions in the group, and the decline is more obvious after the 7th to 9th repetitions.
