In recent years, the country has achieved good results in rural human settlements. But the governance of rural human settlements not only depends on the government, but also needs the extensive participation of villagers, should give full play to the role of villagers. As the most direct and internal factor of farmers’ participation in public affairs, trust can improve farmers’ willingness to participate in human settlements.Academia has proved that trust has a significant positive impact on farmers’ behavior and willingness to participate in environmental governance, ignoring the logic of trust. How to theoretically answer the influence mechanism of trust on farmers’ willingness to participate in habitat environment governance, and how to improve farmers’ participation in habitat environment governance is particularly urgent. In this study, farmers in D township of G City were taken as research objects, and questionnaire survey data were obtained.Based on the theory of trust and the theory of planned behavior, the analysis framework of the influence of trust on farmers’ willingness to participate in human settlement environment governance was constructed.Binary Logistic regression model was used. The influence of trust on farmers’ willingness to participate in human settlement environment governance is explored from two dimensions of interpersonal trust and institutional trust.Secondly, robustness test and missing variables are discussed from the aspects of adjusting samples and variables. Finally, information sharing, cooperation and reciprocity, and normative constraints were used as mediating variables to explore the effect mechanism of trust on farmers’ willingness to participate in human settlement environment governance, and heterogeneous effects were analyzed. The main findings of the study are as follows:(1)Trust in family members in interpersonal trust has no significant impact on farmers’ willingness to participate in human settlements governance, while trust in neighbors has a significant positive impact on farmers’ willingness to participate.Institutional trust plays a significant promoting role in farmers’ decision-making in human settlements governance.(2)In the mechanism test of the impact of trust on farmers’ willingness to participate in human settlements governance, information sharing, cooperation and mutual benefit, and normative constraints all play a mediating role.(3)The analysis of heterogeneous effects expansion found that among various groups, the effect of trust in family members on the willingness to participate in rural living environment governance is mostly not significant; The trust in neighbors, the trust in environmental governance systems, and the trust in system implementers have a significant positive impact on the willingness of most farmers to participate in environmental governance. Therefore,in order to better promote the governance of rural living environment, multiple measures are proposed to enhance farmers’ interpersonal trust, improve the relevant institutional system of rural living environment governance, play the guiding role of local governments and village level organizations, and enhance farmers’ sense of ownership. This study has important theoretical and practical significance in enhancing the willingness of villagers to participate in human settlement environment governance.
