| This report is based on the E-C translation of The Brutish Museums: The Benin Bronzes,Colonial Violence and Cultural Restitution(Chapters 7-9).The book clearly narrates the history of British Empire’s colonization and plunder of Benin City,and calls on western museums to return cultural relics.The translation material mainly introduces the expedition of the British Empire in Benin City and the looting of Benin City.The translation is of some significance for Chinese readers to understand the colonized history of Benin City.According to the classification of Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory,this text belongs to the informative text,which contains rich historical information.Reiss proposes the most important requirement for the translation of the informative text is that the content and information should be fully represented in the target language.Thus,the translator adopts different translation techniques to meet the requirement.At the lexical level,annotations are added to accurately convey the meaning of proper nouns,the meanings of polysemous words are selected according to specific context and the commendatory words,derogatory words and neutral words are converted to express the correct affective meanings.At the syntactic level,the long sentences are translated by splitting and adjusting word order,and the dashes in the sentences are deleted or replaced to make them conform to Chinese expression habits.At the textual level,various cohesive devices are adopted and logical relations are cleared to ensure the cohesion and coherence of the text. |
