The report is based on the E–C translation of The Brutish Museums: The Benin Bronzes,Colonial Violence and Cultural Restitution(Chapters 16–18).This book focuses on the looted artifacts and reflection on colonial violence.The selected translation material describes the attitudes of Western museums to the requirements of returning looted artifacts,as well as the current situations of cultural relics recovery.Therefore,the translation could provide new thinking for China to recover looted artifacts lost abroad,and to better protect existing ones.The translation material is artistic literature that belongs to informative text characterized by rich cultural information and academic specialization.Considering the translation principles and that target readers can have the same reading experience as source readers,the translator,with Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory as the theoretical foundation,discusses the problems encountered in translation practice mainly from three levels,and puts forward corresponding solutions: lexically,the translation skills of literal translation plus annotation and selecting the appropriate meaning for polysemous words are employed to deal with proper nouns,cultural-loaded words and polysemous words;syntactically,division and restructuring are applied to accurately convey the meanings of the long and complex sentences and passive sentences;textually,reiteration and unchanged narrative focus are used to reproduce cohesion and coherence in the translated text.
