"Prevent" and "avoid" are two common verbs in modern Chinese, and also are the core words in the vocabulary of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. They are often mixed in the use process, but they are different in semantics, syntax and pragmatics. This paper uses the method of the least opposite pair comparison to find the semantic differences of "prevent","avoid" and their related words, and tries to find the semantic cognitive basis and pragmatic division of these words.Exploring the usage of these two types of words from a cognitive perspective can help people understand the concept of the purpose category more deeply, which could reduce the difficulties of second language learners to a certain extent, and solve the problems of teaching "prevent" and "avoid" as a foreign language to Chinese learners, and provide help for teaching of Chinese words as a foreign language. The full text is divided into six parts. The starter is an introduction.Starting with two actual cases,it discusses the reasons for choosing the topic, outlines the existing relevant research, analyzes the existing research achievements and shortcomings, and explains the main research methods of this paper and the source of the paper’s corpus. The first chapter first discusses the historical evolution of the verbs "prevent" and "avoid" from a diachronic perspective, trying to find out the possible semantic differences. Then study the semantic cognitive differences of the words "prevent","avoid" and "exempt",and explore the semantic differences and usage division between the two groups of words in combination with the related words "prevent","avoid" and " exempt".The second chapter introduces the grammaticalization process from the words "prevent" and "avoid" as verb to the words "prevent" and "avoid" as conjunctions."prevent" and "avoid" as conjunction inherit the semantic basis of the words "prevent" and "avoid" as verb, but differ significantly in grammatical functions. The third chapter examines the differences between the words "prevent" and "avoid" as conjunction.Combining the semantic differences of the words "prevent" and "avoid" as verb,it explores the relationship between the substitutability and irreplaceability of the words "prevent" and "avoid" as conjunctions in different contexts and semantic differences. The fourth chapter designs the vocabulary teaching of Chinese as a foreign language for the words "prevent" and "avoid" as verbs and as conjunctions, using substitution method, semantic schema method, etc.,so that foreign students can have a clear semantic cognition of the words "prevent" and "avoid" as verbs in the learning process, and provide help for vocabulary teaching of Chinese as a foreign language. The last chapter is the conclusion, which summarizes the semantic, syntactic differences and pragmatic division of the words "prevent" and "avoid" as verbs from the cognitive perspective.
