The literal meaning of "avoidance" is keeping away of something.Avoidance phenomenon is very common in the process of second language acquisition.Due to the fact that the second language learners have difficulties in pronunciation or are confused by some words or sentence patterns, they use some strategies and methods to avoid expressing themselves directly. On the basis of the summary of avoidance conducted by some predecessors home and abroad, the thesis analyses the major forms of avoidance phenomena when Indonesian ethnic Chinese students are learning Chinese, the cause of the avoidance phenomena, the enlightenment for Chinese teachers of how to make scientific teaching plans to minimize the avoidance behavior of students. On the one hand, avoidance behavior can help students to make up the lack of language knowledge and overcome the obstacles when communicating with others;on the other hand, excessive avoidance can also lead to language "consolidation" phenomenon,so students' Chinese level can not get improved. Our thesis uses Elyon Christian School' students as researching object and takes a closer study of avoidance phenomenon by way of a questionnaire and interviews, then the thesis analyses the reason of avoidance phenomena and finally tentatively put forward the appropriate teaching plan.
