During the "May 4th" period,Western modern ideological trends surged in,and the social ideological trend of breaking the old and establishing a new one arose.Modern intellectuals regard new theories as a panacea for transforming society and place them in a sacred and unshakable position. The modern writer Lao She has a profound Western cultural background, but he does not fully accept Western values;Rather,it examines Eastern and Western cultures with a dialectical perspective and reassesses the value of both.In the face of complex and prominent cultural issues in modern China,Lao She keenly discovered that if these new ideas and theories cannot be implemented and do not enter the practical process, they not only do not help Chinese people gain insight into those issues that are deeply realistic and urgent, but also to a large extent, become a pretext for people who are tired of thinking to stop thinking. Therefore, through three social phenomena in Lao She’s novels: the alienated concept of "competition" in the business model, the hollow and pervasive concept of "revolution" in the academic movement, and the "eating and teaching" behavior of using names and doctrines as stepping stones,Lao She shows that the new theory is abstracted into a vague and empty mantra, and even evolves into a vision of acceptance of alienation that is self enclosed and deviates from the actual autocratic consciousness. In response to this scene,Lao She portrayed a series of "fake" new school characters in her novels, trying to find the deep psychological causes of these characters’ superstition in abstract nouns and disregard for practical utility, and ultimately summarized them as profiteering by "fame" and deceiving the world and stealing fame;Old ghosts come back and use old ideas to manipulate new nouns. And set up a corresponding ideal character pedigree to explore ways and means to break away from superstition in abstract nouns: the realistic spirit of learning true skills and striving to move forward; The realization of personal values based on national identity. This path of "breaking the name" reflects Lao She’s value judgment benchmark when reflecting on specific cultural phenomena-"truth",that is,matching the name with the reality. On this basis,Lao She attempts to construct an ideal cultural form that integrates Chinese and Western cultures and cultivates the old and the new.In addition, there is also a certain echo between Lao She’s creative ideas and his cultural position. When accepting various theories,Lao She emphasizes "truth" instead of taking the old and new as the standard, and seeks to understand, accept, and ultimately implement the new theories in the most authentic life experience. Therefore,Lao She regards emotion as one of the characteristics of literature, emphasizes that there should be a genuine and strong emotional resonance between the subject of literary creation and the object of expression, and is wary of any involvement of religious admonitions in this process. At the same time,Lao She does not deny the characteristics of novels that express life and exert social functions, and defines them as literary interpretations of life. This statement undoubtedly provides us with a new way of thinking about the relationship between literature’s emotional expression and social function.
