| The translation material for the report is selected from chapter nine of Rapeseed Oil Processing Technology.The author of the book presents the refining process of rapeseed oil in precise and standardized language from the point of view of the purpose and methods of oil and fats refining,the removal of mechanical impurities by mechanical methods and the removal of gums by hydration.As a science and technology text,the chosen text is professional and practical in nature,with objective diction and strict logic.In view of the linguistic characteristics and stylistic style of the source text,the translation practice is guided by Catford’s translation shifts theory.Combining the key and difficult points in translation,the report summarizes and analyzes the translation methods suitable for this practical project and explores theapplication of translation shifts theory in food sci-tech texts.Catford divides the translation process into level shifts and category shifts.Level shifts and class shifts are primarily used by the translator during the translation of food texts at the lexical level to highlight the static characteristics of technical English,while structure shifts are primarily used at the syntactic level to adjust the sentence structure of the translated text,and unit shifts are adopted to translate clauses and long sentences in Chinese,so that the English translated text can be easily accepted and understood.There are five chapters in this report.The background of translated text,significance of the task,as well as the report’s structure,are discussed in the first chapter.Chapter two covers the implementation process of the translation task.The third chapter systematically presents the translation project’s guiding theory.Chapter four explores the applicability of the translation shiftstheory to the selected textwith specific examples.The translation process is summarized in chapter five along with limitations of the practice report.The translation practice demonstrates the feasibility and practical value of the theory for food science and technology texts.It is hoped that this report can provide some reference for translators who engaged in relevant translation work,boost the development of the rapeseed industry,thus promoting the sharing of technological achievements between China and overseas. |
