A Report On The C-E Translation Of Guilin Art History(Excerpts)

This translation report is based on the English translation practice of the sixth chapter(about 15000 words)of Guilin Art History(2018,Guangxi Normal University Press),written by Xie Puhua,a local oil painter in Guilin.The source text is rich and detailed in content,with high scientific value,and mainly introduces the development and prosperity of Guilin’s arts after the founding of New China in 1949,and the artistic achievements of Li Keran,Zong Qixiang,Bai Xueshi,and other great painters in Guilin.The source text is generally classified as an informative text,with a compact structure,complex sentences,and rich culture.It focuses on the truthfulness,logic,and science of the content.The translator applied Reiss’ s Text Typology and Vermeer’s Skopos Theory as the guidance to analyze the translation difficulties encountered in Chapter 6,such as proper nouns,cultural-loaded words,titles of paintings,rhetorical devices,short sentence groups,and classical Chinese.Besides,the translator demonstrated the translation strategies and solutions employed to solve these difficulties for improvement of the translation.Through this translation project,the translator has summarized the following conclusions: for the translation of the lexical level,such as culture-loaded words,painting titles,and professional terms,The translator should fully consider their connotations and meanings.Free translation or transliteration plus interpretation can better reproduce their cultural connotations;for the translation of the sentence level,such as the classical Chinese,short sentence groups and rhetoric devices,the translator should pay attention to the inherent logic and writing characteristics of the sentences,and adopt appropriate translation methods and strategies,such as omission,additions of logical conjunction,sentence splitting,sentences reorganization,to flexibly handle sentence translation difficulties;for the translation of the textual level,such translation strategies as subject replacement or omission,and additions of logical conjunction can promote cohesion and coherence of the text.The translator hopes these conclusions provide a reference for future research on the C-E translation of art-related materials.This translation report focuses on the C-E translation of the history of Guilin art.It applied English as the media to impress the world with the essence and charm of Guilin’s art,and highlighted the identity and status of Chinese culture,contributing to the further dissemination and development of Guilin’s art culture.
