In April 2022,to foster virtue through education,the Ministry of Education issued a new curriculum standard(2022 version).The new curriculum standard emphasizes the educational direction of curriculum and that students gradually form core competencies meeting the needs of personal lifelong development and social development through learning.Cultural awareness,as the value orientation of core competencies,is an important teaching aim of English courses.The primary pupils are currently in a critical period of language acquisition and individual cognitive development.Guiding students to enhance cultural awareness and cultivate communication skills during this critical period is beneficial for laying the foundation of students’ cultural literacy and improving the quality of English education.Firstly,this study elaborates that it is important for improving the quality of English education to cultivate cultural awareness,and on the interpretation and training objectives of cultural awareness in different versions of curriculum standards under the reform of basic education curriculum.Then,it reviews relevant literature on cultural awareness cultivation at home and abroad;Secondly,with students and teachers as the research objects,this research carries out through student questionnaires,teacher questionnaires,teacher interviews,and classroom observations,and then the data is organized and analyzed;Thirdly,based on the data,explore the problems in the process of cultivating cultural awareness in current primary school English teaching,and analyze the possible reasons behind these problems;Finally,based on the problems and reasons,relevant suggestions are proposed for frontline teachers to cultivate students’ cultural awareness more better.The problems of the cultivation of cultural awareness: firstly,teachers do not have sufficient understanding of the relevant content of cultural awareness cultivation in the curriculum standards;Secondly,teachers’ exploration of cultural information in textbooks is relatively shallow;Thirdly,teachers have deficiency in systematic teaching on the cultural awareness cultivation;Fourthly,the appropriateness of students’ cross-cultural communication is not good;Fifth,students are not fully aware of the close relationship between language learning and culture.The reasons for the above problems are multifaceted: insufficient organization in the new curriculum standards learning;The training of cultural awareness cultivation and teaching is not being satisfactorily implemented;The cultural literacy of teachers needs to be improved;Teachers’ emphasis on cultivating cultural awareness is often superficial;The influence of students’ existing thinking patterns;Students lack strong initiative in learning.Through problem analysis,several targeted advice on disposing of the above problems are proposed.On the school side: by means of school-based training,promote the professional development of teachers;Based on campus cultural construction,create a multicultural atmosphere.On the teacher side: guided by the curriculum standards,teacher need to transform their biased teaching cognition;Teacher can enhance their cultural literacy from multiple perspectives;Teacher can improve the teaching process by taking a student-centered approach.
