Our country’s "Compulsory English Course Standards(2011 Edition)"(hereinafter referred to as "Curriculum Standards")proposes that "cultural awareness is the historical geography,customs,traditional customs,lifestyles,norms of conduct,literature and art,and values of English-speaking countries.And so on"."Cultural awareness" is one of the goals of English courses.The is a close relationship between language and culture,and each language contains rich cultural connotations.But for many years,our foreign language teaching has always focused on imparting students’ language knowledge and language skills,and has neglected the cultivation of students’ cultural awareness.Elementary school is the initial stage for students to learn English.At this stage,the cultivation of students’ cultural awareness will lay a solid foundation for the later learning of English.Therefore,it is imperative to cultivate students’ cultural awareness at the elementary level.In the process of learning English,being familiar with foreign cultures is conducive to strengthening students’ understanding and use of English vocabulary and sentences,and avoiding pragmatic errors in the process of cross-cultural communication.This article uses the literature method,questionnaire survey method,observation method and interview method to go deep into the primary school English classroom to understand the current situation of the cultivation of primary school students’ cultural awareness.This article first expounds the related theories of cultural awareness cultivation,including the relationship between language and culture,and the concept of culture and cultural awareness.On this basis,through a survey on the cultivation of cultural awareness of students in a certain elementary school in Wuhan,we can understand the current situation of the cultivation of students’ cultural awareness in primary school English teaching.The survey found that: there are currently English teachers weakening the cultivation of cultural awareness;students lack cultural knowledge and cultural awareness;the limitations of the cultural teaching evaluation system are not sound.Based on the above issues,the author proposes to comprehensively improve the cultural literacy of English teachers;improve students’ initiative in learning cultural knowledge;organize a variety of activities for cultural penetration;improve the cultural teaching evaluation system.
