An Investigation On Senior High School Students’ English Reading Literacy

The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 edition,2020 revision)proposed to develop students’ core literacy of English subjects,reading,as a kind of understanding skill,plays an important role in improving students’ core literacy.With the gradual deepening of the core literacy concept,in recent years,many researchers have gradually shifted their focus from reading ability to reading literacy.In 2015,Professor Wang Qiang elaborated on the connotation of English reading literacy at the National Seminar on Reading Teaching in Primary and Secondary schools.Since then,more researchers have devoted themselves to the study of English reading literacy.However,at present,domestic researches on English reading literacy mainly focus on strategies and methods to cultivate students’ English reading literacy,while there are few researches on the current situation of English reading literacy.The English reading literacy of senior high school students in different periods is developing and changing,and relevant research needs to be further enriched.In view of the above background,based on the connotation of English reading literacy of Professor Wang Qiang and the theoretical framework of the development goals of Chinese primary and secondary school students’ English reading literacy,this study investigates the current situation of high school students’ English reading literacy,and puts forward teaching suggestions for improving senior high school students’ English reading literacy.This study took 287 students and 4 teachers in Grade One of a senior high school in H City as the research objects.Questionnaires,interview outline and reading test were used as the research tools.Descriptive statistics,independent sample t test and one-way ANOVA were used to process and analyze the data,aiming to solve the following problems:(1)What is the overall status and dimensions of high school students’ English reading literacy?(2)Are there significant differences between high school students of different genders in English reading literacy?(3)Are there significant differences among high school students of different levels in English reading literacy?Through the research,the following conclusions are drawn:(1)The overall English reading literacy of senior high school students is at a moderate level,reading ability and reading character are also at moderate levels,but reading ability level is higher than reading character.Among them,the development of various dimensions of English reading literacy is uneven.Cultural awareness,decoding ability and reading comprehension are relatively good,but reading habits,reading experience and language knowledge need to be further improved.(2)There are significant differences in the English reading literacy of students of different genders,which are specifically reflected in reading comprehension,decoding ability and cultural awareness of girls are significantly higher than that of boys.(3)There are significant differences in English reading literacy and dimensions of students at different levels.Based on the above research results,this study puts forward suggestions on improving high school students’ English reading literacy from both teachers and students,aiming to arouse teachers’ and students’ attention to English reading literacy,improving the cultivation path of English reading literacy,and promoting the balanced development of high school students’ English reading literacy.
