With the implementation of the New English Curriculum Standards for General High Schools(2017 Edition)(hereinafter referred to as the Curriculum Standards)and the continuous deepening of the English curriculum reform in senior high schools,all senior high schools have made it clear that they should focus on the goal of morality education and the cultivation of the key competence of the course in the process of English teaching.Vocabulary teaching is an important part of English teaching in senior high school.It is the premise of language ability cultivation and the foundation of cultivating cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.Only by completing the vocabulary target of the Curriculum Standards,senior high school students can smoothly cooperate with the teaching activities of listening,speaking,reading,writing and looking.However,the current situation of English vocabulary teaching is not optimistic,and the effect of English vocabulary teaching is not ideal so that students’ learning enthusiasm can’t be aroused.Therefore,through literature study,teacher questionnaire,classroom observation and student interview and other methods,this paper analyzes and summarizes the current situation and problems of English vocabulary teaching in various high schools in Shizhu County and obtains the corresponding findings and enlightenment.In this paper,115 English teachers and 25 students from four high schools in Shizhu County were selected.Firstly,the researcher conducted a questionnaire survey on the teachers and randomly observed vocabulary classroom teaching.Taking the four dimensions of language skills,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability as the standard,this researcher will investigate the present situation and problems of English vocabulary teaching in senior high school from the four aspects of the awareness of key competencies cultivation,vocabulary teaching methods,vocabulary teaching effect,and vocabulary teaching resources.Secondly,25 students were interviewed to find out their attitudes,understandings and expectations towards teachers’ vocabulary teaching.The results show that the implementation of key competencies cultivation in English vocabulary teaching in high schools in Shizhu County is not so good.Further research found that the important factors that affect the effect of vocabulary classroom teaching are the weak mastery of educational theory,the poor ability of educational practice,the neglect of students’ subject status,the inaccurate grasp of teaching objectives and content,and the separation of classroom teaching from students’ reality.In order to change the poor current situation of English vocabulary teaching in senior high schools,this paper attempts to put forward corresponding suggestions from the teacher perspective.First,the key competencies with vocabulary teaching methods should be implemented,that is to improve vocabulary training methods,to strengthen students’ vocabulary application ability,to analyze the cultural background of vocabulary,to cultivate students’ cultural consciousness,to create vocabulary language situation,to develop the multidimensional character of students’ thinking quality,to change the form of vocabulary teaching and to improve the learning ability.Second,the key competence should be examined in the vocabulary teaching evaluation.Third,other suggestions for the teachers include strengthening their theoretical training,improving the consciousness of curriculum development,making full use of teaching tools,cultivating students’ interest in vocabulary learning,paying attention to the differences of students’ subjects.
