As one of the famous contemporary artists,Paula Rego has won praise from the public and critics for her amazing and bold narrative works.Rego’s artistic creation always follows her own "narrative will",drawing on legends,myths,Based on non-painting texts such as fairy tales,folk novels,and Portuguese or English literature,it challenges art classics and expresses criticism of politics and thinking about mainstream culture.However,although scholars have studied and interpreted her works one after another,there are still some puzzling and incomplete aspects.In order to better understand and appreciate Paula Rego’s narrative works,this paper uses the theory of intertextuality.Based on the intertextuality theory of Julia Kristeva,Roland Barthes,Gerard Gennet and Chinese scholar Li Yuping,this paper combines the analysis theories and methods of iconography and narratology,aiming at intertextuality.A comprehensive exposition of Paula Rego’s narrative paintings under the domain.Through the comprehensive analysis of most of Paula Rego’s works,this paper shows that intertextuality is the main feature of Paula Rego’s narrative painting,which makes her works present the characteristics of dialogue and heterogeneity,and at the same time It became a powerful tool for her to critique Portuguese religious politics and subvert art canon.This thesis is composed of the preface,the three major chapters and the conclusion.The first chapter expounds the theory of intertextuality and its development,confirms the possibility of cross-text intertextual research,and sorts out the application of intertextuality in narrative painting,and summarizes Rego’s narrative from the aspects of social thought and personal experience The reason for the formation of painting style,and summed up its grotesque,exaggerated,and violent narrative characteristics.The second chapter explores the intertextual relationship between Rego’s paintings and other texts at the narrative level from the three aspects of narrative theme,narrative technique and narrative meaning,taking specific works as examples.Many of Lei Ge’s works are reproductions,parodies and even subversions of fairy tales,dramas,novels,classic paintings and other texts.Whether it is personal memory or collective historical memory,Lei Ge does not have nostalgic feelings for the frequent revisiting of past classics,but through the reappearance of memory,to achieve strong criticism and condemnation,and to achieve the extension of traditional meaning and inject personal thinking on society and politics through intertextual means such as parody,rewriting,and supplementation.The third chapter analyzes the enlightenment of Paula Rego’s art to contemporary art.Paula Rego’s use of intertextual means provides an excellent example for contemporary narrative painting creation,enabling artists to use a new perspective to explore Interpret artistic traditions,use art classics as a material library,form extensive interactive relationships with other texts,and provide unlimited inspiration for artistic creation.This paper combines the theory of intertextuality with an in-depth analysis of some of Paula Rego’s works,which provides a new research perspective for exploring Paula Rego’s narrative paintings,and intertextuality also provides a new perspective for contemporary art creation.creative methods and perspectives.
