In 1970 s,metaphor theory was flourished and gradually formed a discipline named“Metaphorology”.The utilization of metaphor in painting also makes the artists' content more fruitful and intriguing,specially,the use of metaphor among modern and contemporary artists.Paula Rego,one of the greatest female artists in contemporary British,can be compared with Lucian Freud and David Hockney and Peter Doyle,but it is still little-known in Chinese art.Throughout the works of Paula Rego,not only did her works have a strong dramatic effect on the stage,but take possession of some mysterious meaning to metaphor personal emotion.This paper explored the artistic roots of Paula Rego by building the stage of metaphor as the starting point.In the first chapter,the author summarized the unique life and artistic style and the characteristics of the artistic formation of Paula Rego,and then retrospected the visual metaphor embodied by theatricality and the spatial metaphor constructed by stagyatmsphere in the paintings through utilizing the construction of metaphor theory as a starting point.Subsequently the author focus on the interpretation of Paula Rego's painting metaphor,namely the visual metaphor in the shadow and the spatial metaphor in the gaze.The author explored the artistic roots of metaphor in Paula Rego's works by translating foreign literature and books about Paula Rego's,as well as summarized the personal interviews and pictures and exhibitions.In the aesthetic traits,Paula Rego has been influenced by the later art of Goya,to subvert the traditional image,to use the animal metaphor people,and metaphor the grotesque of her own aesthetic characteristics;in addition,Paula Rego is prefer to describe women in the spiritual connotation,her work The Woman is a re-watch to "Art of Balthus".The feminism consciousness was meturalized into the family and religion,and even she is concerned with politics.Finally,the author discusses the inspiration to the present art by Paula Rego's painting that her paintings have both the inheritance of tradition and the quote of contemporary;her art has inspiration in sex and art,uniqueness of the artistic creation and even contemporary Paintings.The art of Paula Rego is mixed with real and fantasy.She reproduced images to the studio including reality and imagination,and her art is like building a metaphorical stage to metaphor all the emotional and artistic spirit of the painting to the stage by using of dramatic techniques;her art is the consideration of current social and power,the concern of humanity,which is concerned in the current art.Therefore,there are many place worthy of our study and learning in her paintings.
