| The report is based on the interpreter’s mock interpreting practice for a roundtable discussion of The Fifteenth Psychologist Conference of China concerning the ways to develop teenagers’ core competencies. The source language material spans 55 minutes and the whole C-E consecutive interpreting lasts for 1 hour and 51 minutes. In the C-E consecutive interpreting, the three speakers discuss without any previously written texts, delivering an impromptu speech.Impromptu speech shows typical characteristics of orality, bringing difficulties to the interpreter. In this mock practice, these difficulties are mainly semantic redundancy, looser text structure and ambiguous logic.reformulation strategy is an important interpreting technique and a Chinese scholar Yao Bin adopts five reformulation strategies to cope with five corresponding difficulties in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting for impromptu speeches. This report analyzes how to use reformulation strategies to better cope with difficulties caused by impromptu speeches in the mock practice.Seleskovitch’s interpretive theory puts emphasis on the transfer of meaning between source language and target language.Due to the characteristics of impromptu speech, the audience should focus on the meaning of the speech and if the interpreter interprets word-to-word,the audience will be confused. With the guidance of this theory, the interpreter adopts three reformulation strategies to cope with the three difficulties(semantic redundancy, looser text structure and ambiguous logic)respectively:omission and summarization, addition and explicitation.Namely, omission and summarization can solve the difficulty of semantic redundancy;addition can solve the difficulty of looser text structure;explicitation can solve the difficulty of ambiguous logic. This report introduces three difficulties caused by the impromptu speech in this mock practice and analyzes three reformulation strategies to cope with them so as to accurately and clearly convey the meaning of the source language. The interpreter hopes this report can provide suggestions or reference for future interpreting learners. |
