Listening comprehension as the first step of interpretation is crucial to the activity. It can impact the quality of interpreting. This thesis discusses listening comprehension obstacles in consecutive interpretation from English to Chinese in order to find out their causes and provide useful coping strategies. This thesis is based on the interpretation of the mock conference on “Urbanization and Sustainable Development”.Factors causing listening obstacles are divided into two types in this thesis: linguistic and non-linguistic ones.Linguistic factors include being unfamiliar with the speaker’s accent and expressions, being unable to grab the structure of complex sentences and the lack of logical analysis.Non-linguistic factors include inadequate background knowledge and preparation, imbalanced effort distribution, and psychological ones.According to the analysis, this thesis proposes some coping strategies.During daily practice, interpreters should build up background knowledge, enhance logic training, and learn to manage stress. In real practice, interpreters should always put listening comprehension in the first place, analyze ideas rather than words, and interpret broadly when necessary. In this way,the author hopes other interpreters can have better listening comprehension skills and quality of interpreting. |
