Establishing Identification In The English-Chinese Translation Of International Relations Texts

This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of Chapters 3-5 of Coevolutionary Pragmatism: Approaches and Impacts of China-Africa Economic Cooperation.As an international relations text,the book is about the urgent desire of China and African countries for common development.The complementary structural needs of the two economies,the huge market potential and the open and multi-dimensional approaches to cooperation provide a constant impetus for growth and a source of innovation for China-Africa cooperation.The source text helps readers understand the process of China-Africa cooperation,helping to strengthen international solidarity and thus has political significance.In order to better express his views,the author of the source book uses various means to achieve identification with the readers.How to establish the same identification in the translation is the main difficulty the translator encountered.To solve this problem,Kenneth Burke’s theory of identification is used to analyse the source text and identify three main categories of identification: identification by joint interests,identification by antithesis and identification at an unconscious level.Then the translator adopts the translation methods of literal translation and free translation,and techniques such as addition,conversion and extension to improve the accuracy and logic of the translation in order to achieve identification.The translation practice and the translation report writing help the translator obtain a deeper understanding of the textual characteristics of international relations texts and the translation techniques for achieving identification.It is hoped that the translation methods adopted and suggestions offered to the relevant translation problems can provide reference for translators of similar texts.
