With the notion of “Chinese Culture Going Abroad” and “Telling China’s Stories”proposed, the translation of folklore culture has been an essential way of spreading Chinese culture. This report is based on the translation practice Chapter Ⅳ in the book of Manchu Folk Embroidery in Kedong County,Heilongjiang Province by Zhou Xifeng. The fourth chapter introduces stitches, embroidery skills,Manchu folk stories and auspicious handicrafts, which are rich in regional and cultural characteristics.Guided by Culture Schema Theory and the three principles in external publicity, the translator adopts the methods of literal translation, free translation and transliteration to translate lexical terms to overcome cultural differences and make terms more understandable for foreign readers. In addition, the translator chooses the ways of sequence adjustment and sentence combination to deal with the problems of run-on sentences. This translation method conforms to the thinking habits of the target language readers.Furthermore, there are Chinese non-subject sentences translated into English with preparatory subject and “there be” sentence pattern, which are closer to English expression habits. In conclusion, this report highlights the translation of folklore culture for external communication. The research questions discussed in this report aim to enhance the translator’s translation skills and knowledge of Manchu embroidery artistry,as well as provide some references for translators and researchers who are interested in Chinese embroidery art.
