| Da Mo Ji is one of Xue Mo’s most notable works.The novel is a model of literature of western China.Xue Mo,formerly known as Chen Kaihong,is a native of Liangzhou,Gansu Province.He is a member of Chinese Writers Association,and is awarded as National First-class Writer.He is also the vice chairman of the Gansu Provincial Writers Association.From 1988 to 2000,it took him 12 years to finish the novel Da Mo Ji,which contains abundant authentic Chinese folk culture.The English version of Da Mo Ji is translated by the chief translator of modern and contemporary Chinese literature Howard Goldblatt together with his wife Sylvia Li-chun Lin.This outstanding literary work,which is full of characteristics of Liangzhou folk culture,and is translated by a well-known sinologist,is a good option for us to study the translation of contemporary Chinese rural literature.From the perspective of cultural schema theory,this study aims to analyze Goldblatt’s translation of Liangzhou folk culture in Desert Rites,and explore how the translator deals with the differences between Chinese and Western cultures in the process of translation,how can he make the translation conform to the reading habits of foreign readers on the basis of preserving the original cultural features.Through the analysis,the author finds that in the process of translation,in the face of complex cultural schemas,the translator uses flexible translation methods to construct new schemas in English,omit source language schemas,replace with the target language schema,so as to help the readers understand the original text.And the more abundant the cultural schemas of the two languages the translator accumulates,the more appropriate the translation of cultural schemas and the better the effect of cross-cultural communication will be.The objective of the research is to serve as a reference for translation of Chinese rural literature with abundant distinctive cultural factors. |
