A Report On The Translation Of Reality+:Virtual Worlds And The Problems Of Philosophy (Chapters 17 & 18)

The translation report is based on Reality+: Virtual Worlds and the Problems of Philosophy written by David J.Chalmers.The excerpt is from chapter 17,“Can you lead a good life in a virtual world?” and chapter 18,“Do simulated lives matter?” of the book,focusing on traditional philosophical questions about value and ethics brought out by modern virtual reality technology.The book is an informative text about virtual worlds and philosophical questions.In order to convey the information of the original text naturally and accurately to the target readers,the translation project adopts the functional equivalence theory proposed by Eugene Nida to guide the practice.Based on the framework of “Comprehension,Expression,and Adaptation(CEA)” proposed by Li Changshuan,the report analyzes the problem related to comprehension of words and phrases encountered in the first place.In order to achieve functional equivalence between the two languages,conversion is adopted to avoid Europeanized Chinese,and division and restructuring are employed to adjust the target text in the Expression phase flexibly.Furthermore,the translator makes adaptations by annotation and the correct use of a four-character structure to bring a better reading experience to Chinese target readers.
