A Report On E-C Translation Of The History Of British Civilization(Sections 1-4,Chapter Ⅱ,Book Three)

The source text of this translation report is Sections 1-4,Chapter Ⅱ,Book Three of The History of British Civilization and Chapter Ⅱ mainly talks about the British oligarchy.In the process of this translation practice,the translator has mainly used the concept of“Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation”(CEA)framework put forward by Li Changshuan in his How to Write a Translation Report and the translator has overcome the difficulties she encountered in her translation practice and have got the expected results with the help of functional equivalence theory.This translation report includes four parts.The first part briefly introduces the background,purpose,significance of this translation project and the organization of this translation report.The second part is the translation process,including three parts:pre-translating,translating and post-translating,in which pre-translating includes text analysis,introduction to the source text and introduction to functional equivalence theory;translating is divided into introduction to the framework of “Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation”,the databases,dictionaries and websites used,as well as the parallel text and corpuses used;post-translating involves self-revision,critical thinking and the supervisor’s suggestions.The third part is about case studies based on functional equivalence theory and the “CEA” framework,which has stated the main difficulties encountered in the translation process from the three perspectives of “CEA” and has expounded the solutions and their effects.In terms of comprehension,the translator has analyzed how to accurately understand and translate human names,place names,pronouns and conjunctions in the source text;in terms of expression,the translator has anatomized the source text to put forward solutions and polish the translation,including skillfully using four-character idioms or expressions,avoiding Euro-Chinese and adjusting sentence structure;in terms of adaptation,the translator has mainly used the translation skills of addition,omission and conversion.The fourth part is the summary of this translation project,which has encapsulated the gains from the translation practice and has put forward some corrective measures for its limitations.This translation practice report has displayed and has shared the translator’s insights in translating The History of British Civilization(Sections 1-4,Chapter Ⅱ,Book Three)with a view to providing ideas for translators of similar texts and a relatively valuable translation for Chinese scholars and enthusiasts who are keen to learn and understand the history of British civilization.
