A Report On The Translation Of Byzantine Fortifications:Protecting The Roman Empire In The East(Chapter Four)

This is a report on the translation of Chapter Four of Byzantine Fortifications:Protecting the Roman Empire in the East,written by Nikos Kontogiannis in 2022.The original text is divided into nine chapters,mainly introducing the military history,military system,military architecture,weapons manufacturing,and other aspects of the Byzantine Empire.By translating this book,we can popularize the relevant content of the Byzantine military field to the readers,let domestic readers have a certain understanding of Byzantine culture,and also provide a reference for Chinese researchers of relevant fields.The significance of this translation project is to sort out and introduce several periods of the Byzantine Empire for relevant readers,from its founding to falling.Also,the text shows and explains the military system,fortress deconstruction,defense system,and diplomatic relations of the Byzantine Empire in each period in detail.It provides materials for readers who are willing to understand Byzantine history and military culture deeply.In this report,the translator strives to address four difficulties under the guidance of the thick translation,including the translation of terminology,annotation and compound sentences and pronouns.According to the principles of overt annotations and covert annotations,the translator has applied translation skills such as annotation,literal translation,conversion,omission,amplification repetition,and division during the translation.There are six chapters in this project,involving an introduction of the project,background information about the book,guiding theory,translation difficulties,corresponding solutions and conclusion.
